PawSox, Iron Pigs Split Double Dip on Rainy Night

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - On a rainy Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium, the Pawtucket Red Sox (20-30) split a day-night doubleheader with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (27-22), taking game one by a 7-3 final and dropping the nightcap by a 3-1 final.

Game one was scoreless until the PawSox offense broke through in grand fashion in the fourth inning. Bryce Brentz blasted his second grand slam of the season over the right-field fence to give Pawtucket a 4-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley responded with a pair in the fifth inning on a two-run shot off the bat of Damek Tomscha.

They added another in the sixth in a sacrifice fly from Deivy Grullon to make it 4-3. Later in the inning, the Iron Pigs loaded the bases, but Trevor Kelley induced a fly out from Malquin Canelo to escape the jam.

In the bottom half of the frame, the PawSox sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs without any hits on a pair of errors and four walks.

In his second start back with the PawSox after a stint in Boston, right-hander Josh Smith went 5.1 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs (all earned). He walked one and struck out 3.

The Iron Pigs got off to a quick start in game two, scoring two runs off spot starter Jeremy Bleich on RBI hits from Adam Haseley and Andrew Romine. Making his Triple-A Debut, Haseley went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles and a single.

Lehigh Valley added a third run in the second inning on Haseley's second RBI double in as many trips to the plate.

The PawSox scored their lone run of the nightcap in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Gorkys Hernandez. Pawtucket left 9 men on base in the game.

Pawtucket's bullpen tossed 4 shutout innings (Dan Runzler, Bobby Poyner, and Jenrry Mejia) in game two.

The PawSox will wrap up this three-game series with the Iron Pigs tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. Pawtucket right-hander Teddy Stankiewicz (2-3, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Iron Pigs lefty Ranger Suarez (2-1, 6.58 ERA). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 10:35 a.m.

This homestand runs through Tuesday June 4 at McCoy Stadium. On Friday May 31, the first 5,000 fans coming to McCoy Stadium for the 6:05 p.m. game against the Tim Tebow-led Syracuse Mets will receive a collector's edition PawSox Baseball Card Set honoring the World Champion Red Sox. Patriots first-round pick N'Keal Harry will be in attendance as well, throwing out a ceremonial first pitch and posing for photos with fans. On Saturday June 1 following a 6:15 p.m. game against the Mets, fans will be treated to Hits of the 2000s Post-Game Fireworks. Sunday June 2 will mark the next Sunday Funday at McCoy Stadium, where fans can play catch in the outfield grass before the game and run the bases afterward.
