INDIANAPOLIS, IN. -- Less than a week after splitting a four-day series, the Pawtucket Red Sox renewed acquaintances with fellow division leader Indianapolis on Monday by rolling to their fourth straight victory, 9-1, before 8,942 at Victory Field.
As the front runner in the International League North, Pawtucket (31-20) is now a season-best 11 games above the .500 mark. Meanwhile, Indianapolis, which sits atop the West, has lost three in a row for only the second time in 2013.
Coming off a series win at Louisville on the first leg of their current road trip, the PawSox also handed the Indians only their sixth loss in 26 home games.
They did it behind an outstanding performance by the right-handed pitching trio of Rubby De La Rosa, Jose De La Torre and Anthony Carter, who were backed by a very balanced lineup that scored eight unanswered runs.
Emblematic of Pawtucket's overall performance at the plate, bookends Jackie Bradley Jr. and Dan Butler combined for four hits (three for extra bases) and four RBI.
Batting ninth, Butler gave the Sox their first lead when he singled home Jeremy Hazelbaker, who reached on an error, with two out in the second inning.
After Indianapolis got even in the third, scoring the first earned run allowed by De La Rosa in his last 20-plus innings, Butler struck again in the fourth. Facing Charlie Morton with the bases loaded, Butler lined a two-run double into the left-field corner to put Pawtucket ahead, 3-1.
Jonathan Diaz and Drew Sutton followed with an RBI single and run-producing groundout to build the lead to 5-1 off Morton (L, 0-1), who was starting on an injury-rehab appearance for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
De La Rosa completed his fourth and final inning by retiring the side in order. After 48 pitches, including 29 strikes, he was relieved by De La Torre (W, 2-0). The latter fanned four in his four innings.
Bradley, who already extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double, belted a home run off Tim Alderson for a 6-1 lead. His 2-for-4 performance, which included a walk, gives Bradley six straight multi-hit outings.
And as if his hitting wasn't impressive enough, Bradley also recorded two outfield assists. Playing left field for the second consecutive night, he threw out Indians at both third and second base.
Hazelbaker proved another standout for the PawSox. An Indiana native, he marked his homecoming with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Closer Anthony Carter appeared in a non-save situation to seal a four-hitter. Pawtucket pitchers have allowed just nine runs during their four-game winning streak and just one run in the last 21 innings overall.
The Sox and Indians are scheduled to meet in the second game of their series at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, when Terry Doyle (3-4, 4.63) starts for Pawtucket against Andy Oliver (3-2, 2.87). For stats, box score, or more information, please visit www.pawsox.com.
