Indianapolis Indians News Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- First baseman Mauro Gomez and catcher Josh Thole belted back-to-back two-out home runs in a four-run first frame, before designated hitter Luis Jimenez added a solo shot in the fifth to help lead the Buffalo Bisons (28-20) to a 6-5 victory and series split with the Indianapolis Indians (34-17) on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.
The International League's top home run hitting club showed off their skills on Sunday afternoon, adding three more homers to their league-leading total of 53 on their way to gaining a 2-2 series split with the Indians.
The IL's top hitter and former Indianapolis infielder Jim Negrych led off the bottom of the first with a base hit, before Tribe starter Brooks Brown set down CF Moises Sierra and DH Luis Jimenez on a fly out and strikeout. With two down, up to the plate stepped 1B Mauro Gomez, who put the Bisons on the board by lifting his eighth big fly of the season over the center field fence.
C Josh Thole then extended the Bisons advantage to 3-0, when he followed Gomez's goner with a longball of his own to center. Buffalo continued their first frame explosion by tacking on another tally, when 3B Mike McCoy drew a bases loaded base-on-balls after back-to-back-to-back base hits by RF Ryan Langerhans, LF Ricardo Nanita and SS Ryan Goins.
Indianapolis got two runs back with a big blast of their own as 1B Matt Hague launched a two-run shot in the top of the fourth after DH Felix Pie led off the frame with an infield single. The longball, which cut the Bisons lead to 4-2, was Hague's fourth of the season and third over his last four games.
Buffalo, however, had a powerful answer of their own as DH Luis Jimenez launched a solo shot in the following frame for his 10th roudtripper of the season. After Jimenez's jack extended the Bisons advantage to 5-2, Negrych pushed it to a four-run lead with a two-out run-scoring single in the sixth.
The Indians did attempt to mount a valiant comeback in the final frame of the contest as C Tony Sanchez drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by 2B Ivan DeJesus, before d'Arnaud brought the pair home with a double of his own. In just his second game since joining the Tribe on Major League rehab, d'Arnaud finished the night 3-for-5 with a run, two RBI and his first stolen base of the season.
Following d'Arnaud's double, CF Alex Presley cut the Bisons lead down to just a single score, when he roped a single to center to make the score 6-5. A wild pitch then allowed Presley to move into scoring position, however, Bisons closer Neil Wagner induced a fly out from Pie to end the threat and the contest.
Buffalo starter Dave Bush (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) earned the victory to improve to 5-4 on the season after allowing just two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings of work. Called into action after the Indians mounted a furious comeback, Wagner (0.1 IP, 1 H) earned his 13th save of the season.
Tribe starter Brooks Brown (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 3-1 after surrendering five runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings pitched.
Indianapolis will now return to the friendly confines of Victory Field for a four-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox, beginning with a special 6:05 p.m. Memorial Day contest on Monday night. Indians players and coaches will be wearing special camouflage jerseys, courtesy of the Indiana National Guard, that will be auctioned off during the contest and the evening will also include a special post-game fireworks show.
RHP Charlie Morton is expected to make a rehab start with the Indians, while the PawSox are scheduled to counter with RHP Rubby De La Rosa (0-1, 3.65).
The contest will be televised on HTSN, Hometown Sports and News, available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 5:45 p.m.
