Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Norfolk, Va. - Chien-Ming Wang conceded just two hits over seven innings as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) opened up an eight-game road trip by shutting out the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) in Memorial Day action on Monday afternoon, 8-0. It was the fourth time the RailRiders have blanked an opponent this season, and improved SWB's record to 23-26.

Wang (3-4) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before a single by Luis Exposito broke it up. He issued just two walks, and lowered his season earned run average to 2.65. Josh Spence tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to complete the team shutout.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre gave Wang a commanding early lead with five runs in the second. Ronnier Mustelier extended his hitting streak to seven games when he singled to start the inning. Dan Johnson followed with a ground-rule double to right field to put runners at second and third. Josh Bell then singled to right field, plating Mustelier and moving Johnson to third. Two outs later, Bobby Wilson walked to load the bases. After Corban Joseph was hit by a pitch to send home a run, Thomas Neal singled through the right side to advance Bell home. With the bases still loaded, Zoilo Almonte capped the inning with a single to right field which drove home Wilson and Joseph.

The RailRiders added another run in the third when Johnson led off with a walk, advanced to second on a walk to Bell, and then scored on a single by Addison Maruszak. SWB led 6-0 after two and a half innings.

SWB continued to play add-on with a run in the seventh. With two outs, Mustelier reached on an infield single, moved to second on a base hit by Johnson, and then scored when an error by third baseman Zelous Wheeler allowed Bell to reach at first base.

The RailRider scoring was capped in the ninth. Neal led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on Almonte's single, and then scored when Mustelier blooped a single to right field.

Mustelier finished the day with three hits, as did Almonte. Neal went 2-5, raising his batting average to .348, and assuring more money for Oklahoma tornado relief. The RailRiders announced before the game that the organization will be matching Neal's donations, and welcome area businesses to join as well.

Norfolk starter Josh Stinson (3-2) allowed six runs over three and two-third innings, and was handed the loss.

The RailRiders will play the Tides in game two of their series Tuesday evening, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. The contest is part of an eight-game road trip that lasts through June 3. Brett Marshall (2-3, 6.11) will get the starting nod from SWB, while Jair Jurrjens (4-2, 3.14) will take the mound for Norfolk. Pregame coverage for Tuesday's game will begin at 6:05 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
