Rochester Red Wings News Release
TODAYÂfS GAME: After splitting a four-game series with the Charlotte Knights, the Red Wings welcome the surging Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) to Rochester for the first time this season to open a four-game set with a Memorial Day matinee (1:05 p.m.) at Frontier Field... With yesterdayÂfs hard-luck, 3-2, setback the Wings dropped to a tied for season-worse 10 games below .500 and are now a season-high 10.0 GB of Pawtucket in the IL North... Meanwhile the IronPigs, who were just one-half game in front of Rochester before the two teams hooked up in Allentown only 9 days ago, have rattled off 6 straight victories since Kyle Gibson almost no-hit them last Sunday and are now only 5.5 GB in the North division.
WITH A WIN TONIGHT, THE WINGS...:
¨Will win just their 5th series opener of the season (4-10 so far this season) and second in a row.
¨Will avoid falling to a season-worse 11 games under .500... The Wings havenÂft been more than 10 games under .500 since the final day of the 2011 season (53-91)
MORE ABOUT YESTERDAY...:
¨The Wings streak of recording at least one extra-base hit was snapped at 33 games as the Wings tied a season-low for hits in a nine-inning game with four -- all singles... Before yesterday, the last time the Wings didnÂft record an XBH was 4/21(1) vs PAW
¨INF Deibinson Romero picked up his first Triple-A hit and RBI as he went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in his 4th Triple-A game Sunday.
¨LHP Aaron ThompsonÂfs 17.1-inning scoreless streak between NBR & ROC was snapped on a bloop, 2-R 2B in the 8th inning.
GOINÂf UP: Before SundayÂfs game, Red Wings C/OF Chris Herrmann was recalled by Minnesota when OF Wilkin Ramirez was placed on the 7-day DL with concussion-like symptoms. Herrmann, who was hitting .238 with 12 RBI in 43 games with Rochester, becomes the 6th Red Wings player this season promoted to Minnesota and 4th in the last week alone joining LHP Caleb Thielbar (3.76 ERA in 17 G), 1B Chris Colabello (.358, 12 HR, 39 RBI in 46 G) and RHP P.J. Walters (4-2, 3.31 in 9 GS).
¨Last season, 23 different players were promoted from Rochester to Minnesota
WORLEY FACING FORMER ÂeMATES IN WINGS DEBUT: The Red Wings will send RHP Vance Worley to the mound Monday for the first time in a Triple-A game since July 9, 2011 with the IronPigs. Worley, the Twins Opening Day starter this season, was optioned to Rochester on Wednesday after going 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts. The 25-year-old went 6-5, 3.00 ERA (32 ER/96.0 IP) in 17 GS with Lehigh Valley from 2010-11 before coming over to the Twins organization along with RHP Trevor May in the Ben Revere trade this past offseason.
¨In two career starts at Frontier Field, Worley is 0-2, 5.12 ERA (7 ER/12.1 IP) -- including his only career Triple-A CG on 4/14/11 (6.0ip, 4h, 3r, 3er, 2bb, 5k, 2hr)
VS. THE IRONPIGS: The Wings have struggled against their North division rival since taking 11 of 16 games from Lehigh Valley in 2008 -- their first year in the IL. Since 2009, Rochester is just 27-41 vs the IronPigs after losing 3 of 4 in Allentown last week. The Wing have gone 23-17 all-time against the ÂePigs at Frontier Field... The Red Wings havenÂft won a 4-game set against Lehigh Valley since taking 3 of 4 at Frontier Field on 8/13-8/16/10.
¨Other than Chris Colabello (7-16, 2 2B, HR, 7 RBI), only two Wings had more than 4 hits in the series last week. Ray Olmedo went 5-14 and Jeff Clement was 5-17 with a double and 4 RBI
A CASE OF THE MONDAYÂfS: The Wings are just 1-6 in games played on Monday this season -- their worst mark of any day of week... Their only Monday win came on April 29 vs. Buffalo (4-3). The only winning day of the week for the Red Wings this season has been ThursdayÂfs (5-3)... Last year, the Wings went 10-10 in Monday contests.
MAJOR HOLE TO FILL: With Chris ColabelloÂfs departure to Minnesota, the heart of the Wings order is without their top threat. At the time of his promotion, Colabello accounted for 30% of the Red Wings home runs this season (12 of 40), 23% of the RBI (39 of 171), 25% of the teamÂfs XBH (29 of 116) and 16% of the teamÂfs hits (63 of 176).
¨Despite not playing since Tuesday, Colabello is still tied for the league-lead in HR (12), hits (63) and XBH (29) and still has 7 more total bases (116) than anyone else in the IL.
WALK THIS WAY: Both Antoan Richardson and Eric Fryer tied Red WingsÂf season highs Sunday by walking 3 times apiece... Richardson, the Wings leadoff man, raised is OBP to .414 and has now walked 12 times in his first 13 games with the Red Wings... Meanwhile, Fryer scored in his 5th consecutive game played -- setting a Red Wings season-high.
