International League Names Players of the Week
May 27, 2013 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Indianapolis first baseman Matt Hague and Gwinnett pitcher Tim Corcoran have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 20-26. Hague becomes the third member of the Indians to win an IL weekly award this season, following Brett Carroll (April 8-14) and Andy Oliver (May 6-12). Corcoran is the first player from Gwinnett to be so honored in 2013.
MATT HAGUE, Indianapolis Indians IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Indianapolis first baseman Matt Hague hit .360 over the past week and led the International League with three home runs, eight extra-base hits and a .920 slugging percentage while finishing T-2nd with 8 RBI. Hague entered the week with just one home run over his first 45 games, but he went deep on Thursday, Friday, and again on Sunday. He also collected five more doubles to push his total on the season to 17, T-2nd in the League. The former International League All-Star is now hitting .296 on the season.
28-year-old Matt Hague is in his sixth season in the Pittsburgh organization after being selected in the 9th round of the 2008 draft. He got his first taste of the big leagues last season, appearing in 30 games with the Pirates. Hague is a native of Bellevue, Washington.
TIM CORCORAN, Gwinnett Braves IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-hander Tim Corcoran was the only starting pitcher in the International League to win twice last week, accomplishing the feat by allowing just one run in outings against the Bats and Mud Hens. He entered the week with just one win on the season (April 7), but that changed Monday in Game 2 of a doubleheader with Louisville. Corcoran tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out a season-high seven batters in a 5-2 triumph. Back on the hill Sunday against Toledo, Corcoran posted zeroes on the scoreboard across 6.0 frames as the Braves rolled to a 9-0 victory. Corcoran's three wins are tied for the most on his ballclub this season.
35-year-old Tim Corcoran is in his first season with the Atlanta organization after signing as a free agent. He is a veteran of 40 games in the Major Leagues, all having come with Tampa Bay between 2005 and 2007. Corcoran is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
