May 27, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Louisville (24-26) entered Sunday with 10 or more hits in 13 of their last 18 games; however the Bats were held hitless until the fifth inning, and were not able to capitalize when getting runner's on base. Pawtucket (30-20) continued their hot-hitting effort, recording 10 hits of their own in the shutout win in the series finale.

Pedro Villarreal (1-2, 4.88) was on the mound for Louisville on Sunday, looking to earn a series split for the Bats. Villarreal has struggled of late, allowing 14 runs in his last 13 innings of work; however Louisville has won the last four games in which he has started, looking to make it five. The starting pitcher for the Paw Sox was left-hander Chris Hernandez (2-2, 4.12); the Bats have struggled against southpaws in 2013, posting an 8-10 record.

Pawtucket would strike early, as Jackie Bradley Jr. drew a leadoff walk in the first inning. Bradley Jr. stole second base on the next pitch, his second stolen base this season and first since April 20. Former Bat Drew Sutton doubled down the right field line to score Bradley Jr., as the Paw Sox took a 1-0 lead. The Bats are now 4-19 when their opponent scores first.

After a 1-2-3 first inning for the Bats, Pawtucket would add a run in the second inning. Ronald Bermudez led off the inning with a stand-up triple down the right field line, just out of the reach of Denis Phipps. Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Bermudez and extending the lead to 2-0.

After a scoreless third inning, Pawtucket would keep their bats hot as Hazelbaker leadoff the fourth inning with a double. Brock Holt, who was amidst the controversy with Louisville's Armando Galarraga on Friday, singled to give the Paw Sox runners on the corners with no outs. Holt went 3-for-3 on the day, and was 7-for-12 in the series with the Bats. After a pop out out by Bradley Jr., Sutton hit a sacrifice fly to knock in his second RBI of the game, giving Pawtucket a 3-0 lead. Villarreal would pick off Holt at first base, leaving Ryan Lavarnway in the batter's box until the next inning.

After a quiet home half of the inning from Louisville, Lavarnway blasted a 438-foot homerun, his third this season, to left centerfield that cleared the lawn seating. Bryce Brentz was next, going back-to-back homers with Lavarnway. Brentz's homerun was 351-foot shot and his ninth of the season.

Mike MacDougal would relieve Villarreal with no outs in the fifth inning following the back-to-back homers. Villarreal finished his evening with 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB and a strikeout. MacDougal got out of the fourth inning without allowing any further damage.

Denis Phipps would break-up Hernandez's no-hitter in the fifth, leading off the inning with a bloop single to shallow right field. Phipps' single was the first base runner for the Bats since Felix Perez's two-out walk in the first inning. Mike Hessman grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to halt the rally attempt. Kristopher Negron followed to single, and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. However nothing came from it as Corky Miller struck out to end the inning.

MacDougal got into some trouble in the sixth inning, walking Holt and surrendering a double by Bradley Jr. to give the Paw Sox runners on second and third with no outs. Bradley Jr. went 2-for-4 on the night and 8-for-17 in the series to raise his batting average to .352 this season. MacDougal would get out of the jam as he stuck out Sutton, Lavarnway and Brandon Snyder in succession to leave the runners stranded.

Konrad Schmidt led off the sixth inning with a single, as the Bats would try to chip away at the deficit. The rally never amounted to anything, as Billy Hamilton flew our and Henry Rodriguez grounded into an inning-ending double play, the third of the night by Louisville hitters. Pawtucket led 5-0 after six innings, where they are 25-3 this season when leading after six.

Chad Reineke threw a scoreless seventh inning for Louisville, inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. In the home half of the inning, the Bats yet again would try to do damage with two outs. Following groundouts by Felix Perez and Neftali Soto, Phipps singled off of the foot of Hernandez. Mike Hessman followed with a single of his own, advancing Phipps to third base. The base extended Hessman's current streak to 21 straight games in which he has reached base safely. Kristopher Negron drew a walk to load the bases for Miller. Pawtucket made a pitching change, bringing in Pedro Beato (3-1, 2.49) to try to get out of the jam. Beato got Miller to groundout to second base, letting Hernandez off of the hook while keeping all three Bats runners stranded.

Jose Diaz threw a perfect ninth inning for Louisville, retiring the Paw Sox in order for the first time since the third inning. The Bats relievers did their part, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six batters,

Louisville needed a monumental rally in the ninth inning, and Soto got things started off with a double to centerfield. Phipps, who went 2-for-3 on the day drew a walk to begin the rally. Hessman was hit by the next pitch from Beato, loading the bases for the Bats with no outs. Following a strikeout by Negron, the left-handed hitting Josh Fellhauer would pinch-hit for Miller, who had left five batters stranded in the game. Fellhauer struck out, snapping his streak of consecutive games with a RBI at four. Emmanuel Burriss was sent to pinch-hit for Konrad Schmidt, but would also strike out to end the game. The three runners stranded in the ninth pushed the game total to nine runner's left on base in the game.

Since 2001, Louisville is 57-41 against the Paw Sox, which is Pawtucket's worst record against any opponent in the International League during that span. After winning the series opener 10-0 on Thursday, the Bats dropped the final three of the series. This marks just the second series loss to Pawtucket since 2000, with the other coming in 2011.

Louisville opens a four game series with Columbus (28-22) beginning on Monday at 4:05 p.m. The Bats send Daniel Corcino (2-7, 7.03) to the mound to face the Clippers' Carlos Carrasco (2-0, 1.36).
