Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders avoided a four-game sweep defeat as they defeated the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) at PNC Field on Sunday afternoon, 7-3.

DAS BOOT: A big reason for the RailRiders' success was the potent pitching of staff ace Chris Bootcheck (5-0) who became the first SWB starter to notch a win since Brett Marshall on May 7. Bootcheck tossed six innings of two-run ball as the team improved to 7-2 when he is on the starting bump.

A LITTLE HELP?: Bootcheck has certainly pitched well, he enters today tied for the seventh-best ERA in the IL (2.82). His recently discovered changeup has helped him hold left-handed bats to a .170 average and just one extra-base hit all year. But he also gets his share of run support. After yesterday's seven runs, Bootcheck has received 48 runs in his nine nods (5.3/game). By contrast, today's starter Chien-Ming Wang has received just 15 runs in his seven starts (2.1/game). The two men represent the extremes among the RailRiders with more than one start under their belt.

THE MOOSE IS LOOSE: After an 0-for-4 game versus Gwinnett on May 13, Ronnier Mustelier was a .167 hitter with 11 games under his belt. In 11 games since, he has hit .358 (19-for-53) with nine of his 11 RBIs and four of his six extra-base hits.

DIRTY DOZEN: SWB snapped a season-high seven-game losing skid with Sunday's success. It had dropped 12 of 13 entering the game. In the longer span, it was outscored 92-54. The franchise had not suffered seven straight setbacks since enduring nine consecutive losses from Aug. 9-19, 2011. That included three losses to Gwinnett, a two-game sweep at Syracuse and a four-game broom cleaning at the hands of Durham in Moosic.

PITCHING PROBLEMS: After its May 11 4-3 defeat of Gwinnett, the RailRiders' pitching staff owned a 2.98 ERA. The team was also a season-high-tying six games over .500. In losing 12 of 13 since, the staff allowed 90 earned runs in 112.2 IP (7.19 ERA) while watching 16 balls to leave the yard. Starters went 0-7 in that time while giving up 52 earned runs in 55.1 IP (8.46 ERA) and allowing 10 of the home runs. The bullpen went 1-5 with 38 earned runs and six taters surrendered in 57.1 IP (5.97 ERA). SWB spent most of the early stage of the season among the IL's best in team ERA, often ranking just behind Indianapolis. It entered yesterday with a 4.17 mark that placed it ninth in the 14-team circuit.

PACING: The RailRiders are officially one-third of the way through their 144-game schedule. Their 9-17 home record has them on pace to go 25-47 (.347) in their first season at the reconstructed PNC Field. The franchise has only lost 40 home games once in its history. The 1994 squad went 31-40 at then-Lackawanna County Stadium.

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders plated seven scores on Sunday despite a 1-for-11 showing with men in scoring position...They left a dozen men on base in the process...All of Durham's 10 hits in the game were singles including top-overall Rays' prospect Wil Myers' first three-hit game of the campaign...The RailRiders turned a season-high-tying three double plays...While SWB snapped lengthy home and overall losing streaks, it enters tonight with a season-worst four-game skid on the road going back to last road trip's four-game sweep at the hands of Columbus...The franchise has not lost five straight road affairs since a six-game skid from June 18-23, 2012...That came courtesy of a four-game sweep at Louisville and a pair of losses at Indianapolis.
