Patterson Makes Return to Lancaster

August 15, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Scott Patterson, who became the first ex-Barnstormer to reach the Major Leagues, has returned for his fourth season in Lancaster, it was announced today.

Patterson, 35, is also well known as the man who threw the first pitch at Clipper Magazine Stadium on May 11, 2005.

The right-hander joined the inaugural Barnstormers team in 2005 as a starting pitcher. At that point in his career, he had never played in a big league organization, instead posting a 21-7 career record for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League.

Patterson got the Opening Night start in Lancaster but did not fare particularly well in the rotation. It was when the 6'7" Western PA native returned as a closer that he made his mark, recording six saves toward the end of the season, including one in the finale.

The following year, Patterson opened the season with a 2-0 record, 14 saves and a 0.78 and caught the eye of the New York Yankees, who signed him and sent him to Class AA Trenton. He posted a 2.33 ERA in 2006 and had a meager 1.05 ERA in the Yankees system the following year.

Patterson got the call to the Majors in 2008 and made his debut with New York on June 1, pitching 1 1/3 innings of a 5-1 loss at Minnesota. He was claimed off the waiver wire later that season by San Diego and appeared in three more games with the Padres.

Since then, he has had time with Oakland, Seattle and the Mets at Class AAA along with a return stint with Lancaster to open the 2010 season. He has not pitched since 2012.

"Scott has a great arm," said manager Butch Hobson. "Based on what he has done here before, we are happy to have him. He will be a good addition to the ball club."

The Lancaster Barnstormers are in their tenth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
