Pats Open Second-Half at Home Versus Brandon

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats open their second-half schedule tonight at the Brandt Centre against the Brandon Wheat Kings at 7:00 p.m.

The Pats are coming off a 6-1 loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday Dec. 17 which wrapped up the clubs first-half on a two game losing-streak. The Pats allowed four goals in the first period and registered no shots in the second and a season low 15 total shots in the loss. Easton Armstrong scored his 12th of the season and Drew Sim made 24 saves. The final shots were 30-15 for the Blades. Regina went 1-3 on their power play and Saskatoon went 2-5 on their man advantage.

Meanwhile, the Brandon Wheat Kings are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday, Dec. 17, ending their first-half schedule on a two game skid following a 5-2 loss to Calgary on Dec. 11. In their last contest, Brandon had a 3-2 lead in the third period before the ICE tied the game late in the third and won in overtime, with Owen Pederson scoring the winner at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Brett Hyland scored twice, and Luke Shipley scored Brandon's other goal. Calder Anderson and Nate Danielson chipped in with two assists and Nicolas Jones made 32 saves in the loss. The final shots were 36-19 for Winnipeg. The ICE went 1-5 on their power play while the Wheat Kings went 1-3 on their power play.

Since parting ways with Don MacGillivray on Nov. 28, with Marty Murray taking over as both Head Coach & GM, the Wheat Kings have gone 4-2-1, going 4-0-1 in their first five games with Murray as coach. The Wheat Kings will play 36 games in the second-half, with 19 at home and 17 on the road.

It's the 465th all-time meeting, and the second of six meetings between the Pats and Wheat Kings this year. Last year, Brandon won the season series 5-2, as Regina went 1-3 at home and 1-2 on the road. During the season series, the Wheat Kings outscored the Pats 31-to-28. The Pats are 10-12-1-2 against Brandon since the 2018-19 season, with 13 of those 25 games being decided by one goal.

HEADLINES

The Regina Pats play the first of three games in five nights this week. The Pats will play 34 games in the second-half with 20 of them at home and 14 on the road.

The Pats recalled 2007 F Cole Temple from the Brandon Wheat Kings (U18 AAA) and reassigned 2007 F Corban Almen to the Saskatoon Blazers (SMAAAHL) and 2006 D Kolten Bridgeman to the Regina Pat Canadians (SMAAAHL).

The Regina Pats have won eight of their last 12 games since Nov. 25, (48GF-to-47GA.). The Pats have picked up wins over Vancouver (3-0), Victoria (9-5), Kelowna (OT, 6-5), Prince George (5-1) and Edmonton (8-2), Prince Albert (3-2), Calgary (5-2) & Spokane (SOW, 4-3) over that stretch. Their losses have been 9-3 to Kamloops, 6-1 to Winnipeg, 6-2 to Moose Jaw & 6-1 to Saskatoon.

Connor Bedard (CAN) faced off against Stanislav Svozil (CZE) in the first matchup for their respective countries at the 2023 IIHF WJC, with Czechia defeating Canada 5-2 on Monday with both Svozil and Bedard scoring goals in the contest. Canada plays tonight vs. Germany.

Last night, Czechia defeated Austria 9-0 to improve to 2-0 at the World Juniors, as Stanislav Svozil tallied three assists, giving him five points (1G-4A) in two games thus far.

BY THE NUMBERS

64: Number of points (27G-37A) in 28 games for Pats captain Connor Bedard leads the WHL...his 27 goals are first, and his 37 assists are also first...the North Vancouver, BC product is also on a 27 game point-streak with all 64 points during that time.

44: Points for Alexander Suzdalev is tied for eighth in the WHL, while his 20 goals are tied for sixth...the Washington Capitals 2022 third- round pick is riding an 10 game point-streak (8G-10A-18PTS), and has points in 19 of his last 20 games (14G-21A-35PTS).

47: Points this season for forward Tanner Howe is third in the WHL, while his 21 goals are fifth and his shooting percentage of 29.9% (21-for-72) is second in the league...he is also on a 12 game point-streak ended last night (11G-10A-21PTS), and has scored in 11 of his last 16.

+15: Plus/Minus rating for 20-year-old defenceman Luke Bateman leads the Pats roster, while also ranking tied for 13th amongst all WHL defencemen...among all the Eastern Conference defencemen, the Kamloops, B.C. product is seventh in +/-.

17-15-1-1: First half record this season versus the Pats 11-16-0 first half record last season where the Pats went 7-7-0 at home and just 5-9-0 on the road...at this time last year, the Pats were 18th in the WHL and sixth in their division while they are fourth in their division and 9th in the WHL this year.
