Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, Iowa - For the second time in as many nights, the Clinton LumberKings seized the opportunities they were presented with runners in scoring position. Backed by four hits with men at second or third, the LumberKings beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-3 at Ashford University Field on Saturday night.

Jamal Austin wasted no time extending his on-base streak to 32 games with a lead off double in the first inning. He came around to score on a RBI groundout from Ji-Man Choi. Quad Cities came back with one in the third and two in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead and chase Clinton starter Jeremy Dobbs.

Clinton reliever Tim Griffin came on and stifled the River Bandits lineup over the next three innings, opening the door late for the LumberKings. Quad Cities starter Hector Hernandez cruised through the first 6 2/3 innings but ran into trouble in the seventh. Clinton had five consecutive singles; all with two away to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single to left by young shortstop Ketel Marte to take the lead. They added a single tally in the eighth as Steve Baron scored on a wild pitch following a one out double.

Kyle Hunter, who came on in the top of the eighth for Griffin, shut down the side in order in the ninth for his third save of the year. The two teams meet for game two of the three game series on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Jordan Shipers (2-0, 1.38) gets the call for Clinton and right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (1-2, 2.17) takes the ball for Quad Cities. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
