Burlington Bees News Release
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (5/18/12) - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (25-17) received an eighth-inning go-ahead home run from Carlos Gomez to beat the Burlington Bees (18-23) with a 5-to-3 score. Gomez is a big leaguer currently playing for the Timber Rattlers because the Milwaukee Brewers sent him to Grand Chute for a rehab assignment.
Game three between Wisconsin and Burlington resulted in an exciting rubber match. Both teams came into the game with four wins in eight meetings. The Bees ended their season-worst five-game losing streak with a win on Thursday night and hoped to start a winning streak with a win on Friday night.
The Bees jumped on the board early - really early. Shortstop Sean Jamieson lifted the first pitch of the game over the leftfield wall for a leadoff home run. Jamieson's homer was his second of the year and the second in the three game series with Wisconsin. The Bees maintained a 1-to-0 lead until the sixth inning.
Nick Rickles hit his third home run over the year with one out and B.A. Vollmuth standing at first base in the sixth inning. Rickles' hit his first home run in Wisconsin in mid-April. His third home run gave the Bees a 3-to-0 lead after the top of the sixth.
Sean Murphy made his eighth start of the year look like one of his best. Murphy looked nothing short of dominant through the first five innings. The tall right-hander had seven strikeouts and only gave up two hits. Unfortunately Murphy gave up two hits in the bottom of the sixth and the second resulted in a one-out two-run home run by Carlos George. The score was 3-to-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
Murphy faced trouble in the bottom of the eighth and eventually made one big mistake. Bees manager Aaron Nieckula met with Murphy on the mound with one out and two men on, and Brewer's outfielder Carlos Gomez due up next.
Murphy's 100th pitch was also his last; Gomez didn't miss and crushed Murphy's offering over the leftfield wall for a three-run home run that gave Wisconsin a 5-to-3 score. Despite being a professional MLB player, Gomez looked nothing like a professional when he took his time soaking in his home run.
Drew Tyson came out of the pen and drilled Max Walla in the back with his first pitch. Home plate umpire, Fer- nando Rodriguez wasted no time in tossing Tyson and then Nieckula when he came out to argue. Murphy (3-4) eventually took the loss after pitching 7.2 innings and giving up five earned runs. He also struck out eight batters and didn't yield one walk despite entering the game with the second most walks on the team.
Murphy's line in the box score robs the right-hander of the real impression his performance left on both teams. But as baseball fans observe several times throughout a season, baseball has a funny definition of the word 'fair'.
Tommy Toledo (6-0) did little more than occupy time on the mound for Wisconsin, but came away with the win.
The Bees head back Burlington to host the Beloit Snappers for a three-game series. The Bees will celebrate Armed Forces Night on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Bees will honor the country's Armed Forces before and during the game. All current serving military and veterans get in for free.
