Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs committed three errors and let a four-run lead slip away Saturday night in a 7-6 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Four of the seven runs were unearned as the Chiefs fall to 19-24 on the season, a half game behind the Kernels in the standings.

The Chiefs broke through against Austin Wood in the second inning. Paul Hoilman led off with a walk and Anthony Giansanti singled to right. Taylor Davis walked to load the bases and with one out, Hoilman scored on a fielders' choice off the bat of Marco Hernandez. Pin-Chieh Chen unloaded on his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to right, to put the Chiefs on top 4-0. The homer was the Chiefs first since May 7 and the third of Chen's career.

Cedar Rapids took advantage of some shaky Chiefs defense in the bottom of the second. Frazier Hall doubled to right and was held at third on a single by Andy Workman. Trevor Hairgrove hit a double play ball but Wes Darvill bobbled the grounder, then threw wide to first base as Hall scored. Workman moved to third and Hairgrove to second as Darvill was charged with two errors on the play. Matt Scioscia hit a grounder to first and beat it out as no one covered the bag and Workman scored to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-2. Chevy Clarke was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a balk by Burke scored a run. A one-out sacrifice fly tied the game and Ryan Jones put Cedar Rapids on top 5-4 with a double to right before Burke got out of the inning.

Cedar Rapids extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Hall led off with a single and moved to third on a hit-and-run single from Workman, Hairgrove walked to load the bases and Hall scored for a 6-4 lead on a double play off the bat of Scioscia.

After leaving a runner at third base in both the fourth and sixth innings, the Chiefs took advantage of a rare Kernels miscue in the seventh. With two on and two out, Ryan Cuneo cut the Cedar Rapids lead to 6-5 with a single to center as Darvill moved to third. Hoilman hit a towering flyball to center that Clarke lost in the lights as Darvill scored to tie the game. Cuneo tried to score on the play as well but Jones bailed out his centerfielder with a strong throw to get Cuneo at the plate and end the inning.

Another defensive miscue by the Chiefs immediately put the Kernels back on top in the bottom of the seventh against Sheldon McDonald. Kevin Moesquit led off with a single to right and moved to second when Giansanti bobbled the ball. Moesquit moved to third on a deep fly out to right and scored the go-ahead run when he slid around the tag from Davis on a groundball to shortstop.

Burke allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits over five innings. The lefty struck out three, walked one, hit one and committed a balk. McDonald (0-2) allowed one unearned run on one hit over two innings with a strikeout. Yao-Lin Wang struck out one and allowed one hit in one inning of work, his first outing since Tuesday.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Taylor Davis (C) - Davis doubled, tripled and walked twice while also throwing out a would-be Kernels base stealer. Davis has hit safely in four straight starts and thrown out 6-of-14 on the basepaths this season.
