BURLINGTON, Iowa. - The Burlington Bees (19-23) completed a comeback and defeated the Beloit Snappers (26-17) with a 9-to-6 score at home. The Bees honored the country's Armed Forces before and during the game, and celebrated with an exciting five- run seventh to seal the victory.

The Bees put a run on the board early. Sean Jamieson led off the bottom of the first with a base hit to centerfield. The Bees loaded the bases for Douglas Landaeta, but the slugger grounded into a double play. Jamieson was able to score, but the Bees traded one run for two outs and settled for a 1-to-0 lead after the first inning

Jonathan Joseph took the mound for the Bees without a win on the year. Joseph only allowed one run in his previous start and struck out five batters over five innings against the Peoria Chiefs. The right-hander looked fine through the first two innings, but fell apart in the third inning. Joseph came into the game with an ERA 6.33 at home and quickly gave up a two-run home run to Kyle Knudson with no outs in the top of the third.

Joseph faced a total of nine batters in the third inning and gave up six earned runs before manager Aaron Nieckula called for a replace- ment. Max Perlman came in and retired the tenth batter in the third inning, but the damage was done and the Bees trailed 6-to-1 after three innings. Joseph pitched a total of 2.2 innings and gave up six earned runs on five hits and four walks.

The Bees did their best to fight back. They scored one run in the fourth when Chih-Fang Pan doubled to rightfield and scored Landaeta. They scored another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly ball by Landaeta, and another in the sixth inning. The Bees trailed 6-to-3 after six innings.

Perlman's outing was almost perfect and kept the Bees in the game. The towering right-hander threw 4.1 innings and only allowed one hit. That hit resulted in a one-out triple by the number nine hitter, Tyler Grimes. But Perlman tightened the reins and struck out the next two batters to end the inning and give the Bees momentum. Perlman (1-1) finished with five strikeouts and his first win of the season.

The Bees carried that momentum to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. For the fourth consecutive inning, the Bees' leadoff man reached with at least a base hit. The Bees would creep to within striking distance after scoring two. With the Bees trailing 6-to-5 and runners at the corners and two outs, Eliezer Mesa delivered a shot to the left-center gap. Mesa flew around the bases for a two-run triple and gave the Bees a 7-to-6 lead. The Snappers gave the Bees two insurance runs when their catcher threw a ball over the head of the third baseman on a pick-off attempt. The bases were loaded and two runs scored.

Chas Mye came on and shut the door for this first save the season and the Bees defeated the division-leader by a 9-to-3 score.

The Bees play game two against the Snappers at 2 p.m. on Sunday. It's also Community Basket Day at the Hive. The Bees will announce the winner of the largest community basket in Iowa. This year the basket includes a $10,000 prize. Someone will also win $2,500 from the Friends of Community Field, but that person must attend the game to win.
