P-Bruins Melt IceCaps 2-1 in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R. I. - The Providence Bruins came away with the win tonight over the St. John's IceCaps at Opening Night in Providence presented by Washington Trust at the Dunkin Donuts center.
Just eight minutes into the first period St. John's goalie Peter Budaj left the game with a cut to the head from a rebound off a shot from David Warsofsky. Rookie netminder Connor Hellebuck came into the game for Budaj and less than a minute later St. John's Will O'Neil notched the first goal of the night. O'Neil's unassisted goal at 8:42 put the P-Bruins down 0-1. Even though Providence had a 13-10 edge in shots, the score remained 0-1 throughout the rest of the first period.
The P-Bruins tied things up just 1:53 into the second period with a goal from Seth Griffith assisted by David Pastrnak. This was the first AHL game for the rookie Pastrnak, and the assist marked his first ever AHL point. Griffith's goal evened up the score at 1-1, and the teams continued to battle into the final period in regulation.
Things remained all tied up through the third period. The P-Bruins had a 15-8 shot advantage over the IceCaps, but with neither team able to net a goal the game went into 7-minute sudden death overtime.
In the end, the P-Bruins got the "W" thanks to Joe Morrow, who notched the game-winning goal just 56 seconds into overtime. Seth Griffith and David Pastrnak had assists on the goal, giving them both two points on the night. Morrow's goal also earned him the Third Star of the Game. The Second Star of the Game went to St. John's Will O'Neil, and the First Star of the Game went to Seth Griffith. The final score of the night was 2-1.

The Providence Bruins are an American Hockey League franchise and the top affiliate of the NHL's Boston Bruins. Since moving to Providence in 1992 the P-Bruins have been among the league leaders in regular season attendance. On the ice the team has enjoyed similar success, having won five division titles, three regular season titles and the Calder Cup in 1999.
