Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (1-0-0-0) had a valiant return to Portland, beating the Providence Bruins (1-1-0-0) by a tally of 3-2 in front of a packed house of 5,601 at the Cross Insurance Arena Saturday night. The deciding factor was three goals scored by the Pirates in the third frame of the game.
After a scoreless first period, Providence took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Alexander Fallstrom at 8:01 in the second. The rest of the frame played out without a goal from either side.
The Pirates stormed out for the third period, netting two goals in the first three minutes. The first came from a power play goal at 1:15 from Lucas Lessio, assisted by Patrick McNeill. Less than a minute later, Darian Dziurzynski scored the go-ahead goal at 2:20, assisted by Dylan Reese and Andrew Campbell. Brendan Shinnimin put up a third tally for Pirates at 7:01 with a five-on-three advantage, which ended up being the decisive blow. Providence attempted a comeback with one last goal at 16:44 in the final period from David Pastrnak.
Power plays proved to be a deciding factor in the contest, with the Pirates converting 2 out of 6 times when they had an advantage of a man or more. The Bruins were unsuccessful in scoring on any of their power play opportunities. Another big factor was goaltending. Portland net minder Mike McKenna (1-0-0) stopped 25 Bruin shots, while Providence goalie Jeremy Smith (0-1-0) had 24 saves.
The Pirates hit the road next weekend, facing off at Binghamton on October 17 at 7:05 p.m., in Hartford on the 18th at 7 p.m., and facing Providence in a rematch on the 19th at 3:05 p.m. The Pirates take on the Monarchs in the first game of the VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service at Manchester on October 24 at 7 p.m. and return to Portland the next night, the 25th, with a game against the Syracuse Crunch at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena.
