Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators opened its 2014-15 regular season with a tough 3-2 overtime loss to the visiting Worcester Sharks. Matt Taormina scored the game-winning goal 6:34 into the overtime period to spoil the B-Sens home opener.

Worcester opened the scoring 8:15 into the first period when Ryan Carpenter pushed a lose puck past Binghamton's Andrew Hammond. After forcing a turnover deep in the Sharks zone, Max McCormick pushed the puck to Garrett Thompson who found an open Ryan Dzingel on the goalmouth. Dzingel flipped the puck past a sprawling Troy Grosenick to even the score at 1-1. Worcester managed to regain the lead with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period when Micheal Haley one-timed a rebound past Hammond making it 2-1 Worcester heading into the first intermission.

Binghamton fought back in the second period to even the score at 2-2 at 16:37 of the period. Alex Grant forced a turnover in the neutral zone and then found a streaking Dzingel behind the Sharks defense who beat Grosenick one-on-one to even the score heading into the final intermission.

After playing a scoreless third period, the teams headed to overtime. Each team traded great scoring chances throughout, but it was Taormina's shot with just over 25 seconds remaining in the sudden death period that was the difference maker.

Grosenick finished with 41 saves while Hammond turned aside 45 of 48 shots faced. Both Eriah Hayes and Taylor Fedun registered a pair of assists to lead the Sharks.

Binghamton returns to action next Friday, October 17, when they host the Portland Pirates in a 7:05p.m. matchup.
