
P-Bruins Defeat Whale 3-2

Hartford, CT - The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-2 Saturday evening at the XL Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Craig Cunningham, Kirk MacDonald and Zach Trotman. The P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Portland Pirates for Thundersticks Day.
The Whale took a 1-0 lead at the 8:10 mark of the opening period. Jonathan Audy-Marchessault scored his 23rd goal of the season, while Kris Newbury and Wade Redden recorded the assists. Connecticut led 1-0 going into the first intermission.
Providence tied the game at one 41 seconds into the second period, while on the power play. David Warsofsky caused a turnover in the P-Bruins zone and fed Josh Hennessy the puck in the neutral zone. He passed the puck up ahead to Cunningham, giving him a breakaway. Cunningham backhanded the puck into the upper corner of the net for his 18th goal of the season. The P-Bruins took their first lead of the game at the 14:59 mark. Jared Staal passed the puck to Hennessy. He sent it up ahead to MacDonald, who tallied his ninth goal of the season. Providence led 2-1 going into the second intermission.
The P-Bruins made it 3-1 at the 4:18 mark of the third period, while on the power play. Cunningham held the puck halfway along the boards and passed it to Warsofsky at the left point. He sent it to Trotman at the right point. He shot the puck and it went into the net for his first goal of the season. Connecticut pulled within a goal at the 19:31 mark, while on the power play. Newbury netted his 23rd goal of the season, with Audy-Marchessault getting the lone assist. Providence held on for the 3-2 victory.
Anton Khudobin stopped 33 of 34 shots for the P-Bruins, while Chad Johnson made 28 saves for the Whale. The P-Bruins were 2-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return to The Dunk Sunday for Thundersticks Day presented by parsonsKellogg at 4:05 p.m. against the Pirates.
