Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 3-2 Friday evening in front of 9,741 fans at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Jay Leach, Jeff Hoggan and Julian Talbot. Providence remains in second place in the Atlantic Division with 64 points and a 30-19-1-3 record, three points ahead of the third place Hartford Wolf Pack.
The P-Bruins scored the lone goal in the opening period only 56 seconds into the game. From the high slot, Leach sent the puck past Springfield net minder Karri Ramo and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. David Krejci and Petr Kalus had the helpers.
In the second period, the P-Bruins extended their lead at the 4:47 mark. Krejci took a shot, which was stopped by Ramo, but the rebound landed right back on his stick. From there he sent the puck to Hoggan cutting in from the slot. He slapped the puck into an empty net with Ramo leaning in the wrong direction to give the P-Bruins a 2-0 lead. Sean Curry recorded the second assist. The Falcons got on the board at the 10:55 mark of the period. While on the power play Matt Smaby took a shot from the left point, which was redirected by Eric Healey and into the net. Norm Milley tallied the second assist. Eleven seconds later the P-Bruins retook a two goal cushion. T.J. Trevelyan passed the puck to Ben Walter who sent a shot towards the net. Ramo made the save, but the rebound went right to Talbot, playing in his first AHL game. Standing right outside the crease Talbot pushed the puck past Ramo and into the net to give Providence a 3-1 lead. The Falcons answered back at the 15:33 mark. This time it was Marek Kvapil with an even strength goal. Justin Keller and Dan Cavanaugh picked up the assists.
The P-Bruins went into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead and after a scoreless third period went on to win by the same score.
Jordan Sigalet stopped 26 of 28 shots for the P-Bruins, while Ramo made 22 saves for the Falcons. Providence was 0 for 3 on the power play, while Springfield went 1 for 4 on the man-advantage.
