Otters Hold Off Freedom

EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Otters came back and then hung out to down the Florence Freedom 7-6 Tuesday night at Bosse Field.
Florence carried a 5-2 lead with them into the fourth inning before the Otters reeled off five straight runs to take a lead they would not give up.
Andy Clark (2-4) gave up his second two-out, two-run home run to Dustin Koca (5,6) in the fifth inning which then tied the game at five. Clark then walked Frank Meade and Greg Alexander who both came in to score on an error in left field by Matt Stiffler as he overran the ball trying to throw out Meade at home.
That made it 7-5 and the Otters, now 10-0 when taking a lead past the seventh inning, had one final hurdle to clear before the win in the seventh.
The Freedom loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Nick Utley got Ryan Basham swinging for the second out. After a run scored on a walk to Justin Pickett by Utley, Ben Paxton got Erold Andrus to fly out to center to end the inning at 7-6.
Utley (3-3) picked up the win going 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and one earned run. Justin Smith picked up his seventh save of the season for the Otters with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Freedom built the three run lead before the Otters comeback with a two-out, two-run double by Basham in the first. Andrus doubled home Pickett to make it then 4-2 in the fourth before he scored later on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
The Freedom (21-21) will take on Evansville (13-30) in game two of the series on Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. from Bosse Field. Moises Melendez (4-4) will be on the mound for the Freedom. Listen to the Freedom on the road on Classic Country 106.7 FM WNKR or 1067WNKR.com.
