Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Avon, OH - For one of the few times in 2009, the Lake Erie Crushers offense was stymied as Gateway right-hander Paige Dumont held them to a run on five hits as the Grizzlies beat the Crushers 7-1 at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night.

Dumont, a former pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, went the distance for a complete game victory as he struck out six and walked two to get his first win as a member of the Grizzlies. "Dumont was dominating tonight," said Crusher manager John Massarelli. "He changed speeds and threw strikes and that's the name of the game."

Crusher starter Jorge Charry had an impressive debut on the mound for Lake Erie as he went five innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts and no walks. But the plan was to keep a close eye on his pitch count in his first start of the season, so Massarelli took Charry out prior to the start of the sixth inning. Charry ended up taking the loss in the game. "This is baseball and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose," said Charry afterwards through interpreter Jodam Rivera. "I tried to do everything I could to help us win."

Gateway would score three times against Lake Erie reliever Shannon Sprouse, as Alex Keirns and Charlie Lisk delivered RBI hits in the sixth and Brandon Johnson added a run scoring double in the seventh. The lone Crusher run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Drew Saylor brought home Jodam Rivera with an RBI groundout. The Grizzlies put the game out of reach in the ninth with three more runs, all with two outs. Johnson hit his fourth homer of the season and Lisk and Stephen Holdren added run scoring singles off of Jacinto Gonell.

Lake Erie drops to 24-18 on the season but will go right back to work on Wednesday night as they'll continue their three game series with the Grizzlies. Paul Fagan will get the start against Nathan Melek.
