Rockford Rallies Past Beach Bums

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Traverse City Beach Bums opened a six-game roadtrip against West Division foes by falling to the Rockford RiverHawks 7-5 on Tuesday night.

The Beach Bums set the tone of the game early. Corey Whiting led off the contest by drawing a walk from Rockford starter Tanner Watson. Watson, who is the RiverHawks' all-time leader in wins, threw 16 pitches to Whiting in the at bat. Whiting fouled off 10 pitches and stole second after drawing the walk. He was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a single by Mike Epping. Epping stole second and scored on a single by Sean Hoorelbeke on an 0-2. Brian Lapin followed with a single on the first pitch to plate John Alonso, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Rockford was able to tie the game by getting big contributions from their #9 hitter, Jono Brooks. Brooks led off the third inning with a triple and scored on a basehit by Matt Mazurek. With two outs in the fourth inning and Anthony Albano at second, Brooks doubled to tie the score.

John Alonso put the Beach Bums back in front in the fifth. Alonso hammered a 2-1 offering from Watson over the wall in left for his fifth homer of the season. Along for the ride was Brad Miller as Traverse City led 4-2.

Rockford took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to chase Kevin Reese from the game. Todd Martin singled to start the frame and Ross McCoy beat out a bunt attempt. Anthony Albano doubled in one run to pull Rockford within 4-3. David Hurst relieved Reese and Caleb Fields tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Jono Brooks doubled to put Rockford ahead.

Mike Victor came through in a pinch-hitting situation to knot the game in the eighth. Victor came up with the bases loaded and recorded an infield single on an 0-1 offering from Jose Mateo, who recorded the win. The RiverHawks put two on the board in the bottom of the inning when Caleb Fields singled in a pair.

The Beach Bums continue the series with Rockford tomorrow night with another 8:05pm contest. RHP David Dinelli (0-1, 2.70) takes the ball for the Beach Bums while RHP Jay Monti (4-3, 5.10) goes for Rockford. The contest can be heard live on the Fox FM.
