Other Show in Town Also Fighting for Playoffs

August 23, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, KY - It looks like the Reds aren't the only professional baseball team in the thick of a playoff hunt in the Greater Cincinnati area this summer.

After a 6-4 win Wednesday night, the Frontier League's Florence Freedom find themselves just one game out of their first playoff berth with 10 games to play.

The franchise that was formally known as the Johnstown Johnnies before becoming the Florence Freedom in 2003, have missed out on the postseason for the past nine seasons.

That could all change in 2012 as second-year manager Fran Riordan, the league's all-time winningest skipper, has his club at 48-38 and winners of four straight.

Currently the Freedom trail a jam-packed wild card race by a single game that includes a three-way tie for the final playoff berth between the Lake Erie Crushers (Avon, OH), Windy City Thunderbolts (Crestwood, IL) and Schaumburg Boomers (Schaumburg, IL).

The Frontier League playoffs consist of the two division winners (East and West), and then two wild card teams. The wild card teams are the next two teams with the highest winning percentage, regardless of division.

If the season were to end today, the Traverse City Beach Bums (Traverse City, MI) and Gateway Grizzlies (Sauget, IL) would be in as division winners. The Southern Illinois Miners (Marion, IL) would be in as the top seeded wild card team. Then comes the battle for the final spot between the Freedom and the three previously mentioned teams.

The Freedom have four home games remaining this season before finishing with six on the road. The home series includes the final Rewind 94.9 Thirsty Thursday presented by Parrot Bay tonight. Fans not only can cheer on their playoff charging Freedom, but also enjoy $1 beer, soda and hot dogs as the club looks to sweep the Joliet Slammers (Joliet, IL).

Friday night, the Freedom welcome the Washington Wild Things (Washington, PA) to town for the final three-game set of the season. Friday night's promotions include an amazing double fireworks show by the people who do them best, Rozzi. Game time for both Thursday and Friday is 7:05pm.

Saturday presents a unique giveaway opportunity for fans and the first 300 through the gates to throw their "Pants on the Mound" will receive a pair of Freedom boxer shorts presented by Reinhart Food Service. The lightly used pants will then be donated to local Goodwill locations. TomGill.com Rockin' Saturday concludes with a live concert by Doghouse post-game.

Sunday marks the 2012 home finally and on this Bank of Kentucky Family Sunday, the Freedom will be going out with a bang, and a roll, as after the final out Rozzi fireworks will explode and 2,000+ rolls of toilet paper will go flying as fans TP the ballpark presented by Charmin. Game time for both Saturday and Sunday is 6:05pm.

At all remaining home games, the Freedom are giving fans the opportunity to earn free playoff tickets simply by purchasing food and merchandise while enjoying the game. For every $10 spent inside the ballpark, one playoff ticket voucher will be awarded to the fans.

The Freedom are located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, Kentucky and can be contacted for tickets $10 and under, as well as free parking, at (859) 594-HITS (4487). Visit the Freedom online at www.FlorenceFreedom.com.
