Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, swept the Rockford RiverHawks with a 11-5 victory.
Washington has won five of their last six games.
The Wild Things brought the bats out again tonight, and put up five runs in the top of the first. Shain Stoner smashed a one-out grand slam to highlight the inning. AJ Nunziato also drove home Darian Sandford on an RBI single to right field.
Rockford chipped away in the second and third, picking up a run in both innings. RBI singles accounted for both of the RiverHawk's runs.
Washington led 5-2 after three.
The Wild Things added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nunziato led off the inning with a solo shot, his fifth home run of the season. Rick Devereaux added an RBI later in the inning, driving in Gus Benusa on a one-out single.
Both Nunziato and Devereaux were productive at the plate. They combined to go 7-for-9 with four RBI's and three runs scored.
Dave Rucinski suffered the loss in the contest, allowing seven runs on eleven hits. It was the third time this season that Rucinski allowed seven runs in an outing.
The Riverhawks responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to four runs.
The starter for the Wild Things, Shawn Smith, allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Smith also fanned five, and picked up his second win in his fifth start this season.
Another productive inning in the bottom of the sixth brought Rockford within two. A sacrifice fly by Jet Butler brought home the first run of the inning, and Greg Van Horn later scored on a wild pitch by reliever Eric Blackwell.
The scoring halted in the seventh and eighth, and the score remained 7-5 heading into the ninth.
Washington added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth to extend their lead. Stoner picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a double to left. The Wild Things were able to pick up four runs in the inning, and went into the bottom of the ninth with an 11-5 lead.
Orlando Santos pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the deal for the Wild Things.
