O'Fallon, MO - The Southern Illinois Miners got the bats going tonight as they scored nine runs in their 9-2 victory over the River City Rascals. The Miners registered ten hits and got a strong outing out of starter Brian Fowler. Fowler pitched five innings and gave up five hits, two of them solo home runs by Doug Sanders and Charlie Lisk. Fowler walked one batter and struck out four in earning his sixth victory on the season.
Doug Sanders gave the Rascals an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Brian Fowler. The Miners didn't score their first runs of the game until the top of the third inning off Rascals starter Liam Ohlmann. Cannon Lester hit a two run home run with Carlos Mendez on first base to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.
The Miners added to their lead off Ohlmann in the top of the fourth inning. With a runners on second and third after Jason Ganek laid down a sacrifice bunt, Carlos Mendez hit a RBI groundout to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Chris Anderson came through with a RBI double to make it a 4-1 lead and Cannon Lester added another RBI to make it a 5-1 game. Cory Harrilchak capped off the inning with a two out RBI single to give the Miners a 6-1 lead.
Charlie Lisk hit a solo home run off Fowler in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Miners lead to four runs but the Miners answered with more in the top of the fifth inning. Carlos Mendez had a two RBI single with one out in the inning and Javier Herrera scored on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 9-2 lead.
Darrin Tew, Reese McGraw, Gabriel Shaw and Steven Grife all pitched scoreless innings for the Miners as they would improve to 51-35 on the season. With the series win over River City, the Miners are 5-1 against the Rascals this season. The Miners are in second place in the Eastern Division and welcome in the Windy City Thunderbolts Friday night at Rent One Park. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
