NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, surrendered late-inning runs for the third consecutive night and lost 5-3 to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.

The Beach Bums quickly tallied in the first inning, as Ryan Still led off with a walk followed by a base hit by Brian Heere, and Still scored on a double to left by Chase Burch for a 1-0 lead.

The CornBelters answered right away in their half of the opening frame. Bobby Rinard singled with one out followed by a walk to Pat McKenna. Rinard moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

The Belters took the lead in the third after Ty Wiesemeyer led off with a single and scored on a triple to left center by Bobby Rinard to take a 2-1 lead. Steven Felix plated Rinard with a single to right to push the lead to 3-1 and end the night for Bums starter Kurt Wunderlich.

The Bums evened the score in the fifth on a two-run homer over the left field fence by Chase Burch, his second of the series.

The Beach Bums gained a 4-3 lead in the ninth when Ryan Still led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double that bounced over the center field wall by Jose Vargas. Jeff Flagg brought home Vargas with a base hit just over the left side of the infield to give the Bums a 5-3 advantage.

Scott Mueller (2-5) picked up the win while Matt Miller recorded the final two outs for his ninth save. Brendon Smith (2-7) was charged with the loss for the second straight night.

The CornBelters begin their final road series of the season on Friday night in Sauget, Illinois against the West Division-leading Gateway Grizzlies. Left-hander Jacob Liedka (2-11, 4.19 ERA) starts for the CornBeltes against Grizzlies right-hander Tim Brown (10-2, 2.11 ERA). First pitch at GCS Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:50 pre-game on WJBC.com.
