Evansville Otters News Release
(SCHAUMBURG, Illinois) - Pitcher Adam Champion threw 8.0 innings and first baseman Nick Schwaner hit a go-ahead two run home run late in the Otters 4-2 win over the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night. b
b0 Evansville jumped ahead in the very first inning against pitcher Robby Donovan. After a pair of outs, first baseman Nick Schwaner reached on an error and scored on a run-producing double from outfielder DeAngelo Mack.
Evansville native Adam Champion held the 1-0 lead until the third inning when catcher Mike Valadez reached on a leadoff infield single and scored on a two-run home run from outfielder Nate Baumann.
Down by a run, the Otters rallied to tie the game in the fifth. Evansville had three straight hits including an RBI single from Runey Davis to center field. Even at two, Evansville was then looking for the lead. With two men on base and no outs, infielder Taylor Black hit a deep fly ball to left center field that was run down by outfielder Jereme Milons. After catching the ball, Milons threw back to second base to double up Billy Killian and a relay throw to first base completed an inning-ending triple play.
The game remained tied until the eighth when Schwaner's home run handed Evansville the lead. Champion completed the home half of the inning unscathed and closer Eric Massingham threw a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
Evansville closes the road trip with a series win, improving to 41-45 in the standings. The Otters also temporarily dropped the Schaumburg Boomers out of the playoffs, and down to 49-38 overall.
Champion (7-4) allowed just two runs on six hits in the win. Donovan (9-5) yielded four runs (three earned) in 8.0 innings. Massingham also earned his 21st save.
The Otters return home on Friday to host the Road Warriors in a two day, three game series. All games will feature a $1 baseball bonanza with tickets, beer, hot dogs, peanuts and popcorn for the price of $1. Friday's game is Social Life Marketing Night with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. at Historic Bosse Field. Right-hander Wynn Pelzer (1-3, 4.87 ERA) will start for Evansville against Road Warriors righty Matt Schimpf (4-5,5.56).
