Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
After getting swept by Indianapolis on the road last week, the Pigs responded at home with a walk-off 6-5 win. Trailing by one in the bottom of the ninth and JP Crawford at first, Danny Ortiz homered into left field to take game one of the series against Indianapolis.
The Indians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Harold Arauz making his first career start at Coca-Cola Park. After allowing two hits in the first, Arauz settled in to retire the next 13 batters that he faced through the fifth.
In the bottom the first the IronPigs answered with a run to tie the game at one. A RBI double by Trevor Plouffe made it 1-1 against starter Brandon Waddell. Lehigh Valley plated runs in the next two frames to make it 3-1. Matt McBride doubled in the second to and one inning later Zach Green doubled home a run to put Lehigh Valley up 3-1.
Arauz left in line to pick up his first AAA win after tossing five-strong innings for the Pigs. He allowed four hits, just the one run and struck out eight. It is the fourth time in 2018 that Arauz has struck out at least eight batters. Tom Windle was first out of the pen and provided a pair of scoreless innings. Windle struck out two and allowed one hit in his 41st appearance of the year.
The Indians reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh against the Pigs to take a 5-3 lead. The IronPigs responded in the bottom the seventh trailing by two. Already with a RBI and an extra-base hit, Trevor Plouffe homered deep into left-field to make a one run game. For Plouffe it was his 12th home run of the season and first since returning to the IronPigs after his stint in Philadelphia.
The IronPigs trailed by one heading into the bottom of the ninth after Tyler Gilbert (1-1) kept the Indians off the board in the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth with Crawford on first, Ortiz on the first pitch he saw from Jesus Liranzo (2-2) homered into left-field to win the game for the Pigs.
With the victory the IronPigs reduce their magic number to clinch the IL-North to eight. The IronPigs and Indians will resume their four-game set tomorrow night at 7:05. Cole Irvin takes the hill for Lehigh Valley. Stick around after the game for Prince Friday Night Fireworks presented by TD Bank.
