From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians split a doubleheader with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, prevailing in game one, 7-3, but dropping a 3-1 decision in game two. Mitch Keller emerged victorious for a second straight start with a seven-strikeout performance over six innings in game one. The Indians scored four runs and sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, and salted the lead late. The RailRiders used a wild pitch and passed ball to score the decisive runs in game two. Wyatt Mathisen homered to provide the only offense for the Tribe in the nightcap.

FAREWELL, NEWMAN: The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased the contract of INF Kevin Newman prior to tonight's game. Newman was batting .302 with four home runs and 35 RBIs in 109 games before his promotion. Newman ranked first in the International League in runs scored (74) and stolen bases (28). He played in 40 regular-season games for the Tribe in 2017, batting .283 with 13 extra-base hits after his promotion last season from Double-A Altoona. Newman was the 19th overall pick of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona.

WALKIN' IN SCRANTON: Last night in game one, the Indians drew 12 walks to shatter a previous best for the season. The Tribe had drawn eight walks in a game four different times, but they coaxed the dozen free passes in a seven-inning game, including five in the top of the second inning.

WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION: Two of baseball's top prospects squared off in Game 1 last night. Mitch Keller (1-2, 6.67), rated as Baseball America's No. 12 overall prospect prior to the season, faced southpaw Justus Sheffield (5-3, 2.16) in the highly-touted matchup. Keller worked six innings to win for the second straight start while Sheffield was chased by the Tribe's offense. He needed 72 pitches to record five outs before being removed from the contest.

SWEEP CITY: Indianapolis has swept five different series this year, each of them being three-game sets (6/5-7 @ ROC, 6/19-21 vs. NOR, 6/25-27 @ TOL, 7/6-8 vs. COL, 8/7-9 vs. LHV). Lehigh Valley had only been swept once all season (5/15-17 @ SWB). In the head-to-head series dating back to 2008, Indy has swept the 'Pigs just once before last week's triumphs (3 games, 5/1-5/3/15 at Victory Field).
