Marabell Wins Game One against Syracuse

The Columbus Clippers defeated the Syracuse Chiefs, 8-4, tonight at Huntington Park thanks to an eighth inning rally that saw them tie the game and then take a lead they wouldn't relent.

Connor Marabell blasted his second homerun of the year, a grand slam over the right field wall, to win it in the bottom of the eighth.

The scoring started in the third, as the Chiefs took an early lead when Andrew Stevenson singled in two runs off Columbus starter Adam Wilk.

Ahead 2-0, they added one more on the fourth on Matt Reynold's third homerun of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall.

Eric Haase put the Clippers on the board in the bottom of the inning, though, sending his own solo shot over the wall in left to make it 3-1. His 17th of the year broke a tie for the team lead with Adam Rosales. He wasn't done, however.

He extended his team lead in the sixth inning, taking Chiefs' starter Austin Voth deep for the second time. It was another solo homerun, this time his 18th, pulling the Clippers within one at 3-2.

Wilk would run into trouble in the seventh, putting runners on the corners. He then attempted to pick the runner at first off, but the throw got away from first baseman Joe Sever, allowing the runner from third to score for a 4-2 lead.

Wilk's day would be done soon after, having allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits. He didn't walk anybody and struck out eight.

The Clippers would continue to come back in the seventh inning when Eric Stamets bunted to third with two on and the throw from pitcher Carlos Torres got away at third. That allowed one run to score to bring Columbus within 4-3. The Clippers loaded the bases after that, but Torres struck out three consecutive hitters to escape the jam.

They'd go on to load the bases again in the bottom of the eight and cashed in when Brandon Barnes coaxed a two-out walk to tie things at 4-4. It didn't take long to take the lead, as the next batter, Marabell, belted a grand slam over the wall in right to take an 8-4 lead.

Josh Martin shut down the Chiefs in the ninth for the win.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. for game two.
