Columbus, OH - The Syracuse Chiefs held a 4-3 lead over the Columbus Clippers after seven innings, but a five-run eighth inning for Columbus helped the Clippers to an 8-4 win Thursday night at Huntington Park in Columbus. Andrew Stevenson continued his hot stretch for the Chiefs, collecting two hits and two RBIs in the game.

Columbus (66-57) trailed, 4-3, entering the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Yu Chang singled off Carlos Torres. Joe Server followed with a double that put runners at second and third. Oscar Mercado then walked to load the bases. After Eric Stamets struck out, Brandon Barnes walked, scoring Chang to tie the game, 4-4. Connor Marabell followed with a grand slam off Chris Smith to right field, just clearing the 22-foot high wall on the first pitch he saw, giving Columbus an 8-4 lead.

Syracuse (53-70) put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the third inning against Clippers starter Adam Wilk. With one out, Tuffy Gosewisch singled. Bengie Gonzalez followed with an infield single, and the runners moved up to second and third on a throwing error on Stamets at second. Two batters later, Stevenson hit a two-out single to left-center field, scoring both Gosewisch and Gonzalez for a 2-0 Syracuse lead.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Matt Reynolds led off the inning by crushing a ball over the left-field wall for a home run that put Syracuse in front 3-0.

The Clippers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Eric Haase homered to left field on a 2-2 pitch off Austin Voth, trimming the Syracuse advantage to two, 3-1.

Columbus scored again in the sixth. With one out, Haase homered again to left field on another 2-2 pitch to cut the Chiefs edge to one, 3-2.

Syracuse extended its lead in the top of the seventh. With one out, Adrian Sanchez doubled. Chris Dominguez followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Wilk then committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt to first base, allowing Sanchez to score from third to put the Chiefs back up by two, 4-2.

The Clippers responded in the bottom of the seventh. Server was hit by a Torres pitch to begin the frame. Mike Papi followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Stamets then laid down a bunt, and Torres made a throwing error attempting to get the lead runner at third, allowing Server to score and bring the Clippers within one run again, 4-3. After a walk, Torres struck out the next three batters with the bases loaded to preserve the lead for the moment, before the Clippers broke through in the eighth.

The Chiefs and Clippers continue their four-game series with the second game on Friday night. RHP Jefry Rodriguez is scheduled to throw for Syracuse. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
