Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Right-hander Grant Gavin and right-hander Tyler Zuber combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, but the Omaha Storm Chasers failed to outscored the Indianapolis Indians, falling, 3-2, in the series opener on Tuesday at Victory Field.
Omaha (37-22) scored first, plating a run against right-hander Mitch Keller (Win, 1-0) in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Angelo Castellano.
Left-hander Marcelo Martinez (Loss, 1-3) held Indianapolis (30-29) scoreless for the first 3.2 innings, but allowed three consecutive singles with two outs in the fourth inning to yield a run and allow the Indians to tie the game.
Indianapolis took the lead for good in the fifth, when they strung together four consecutive singles with two outs against Martinez to plate two runs and go in front, 3-1. Overall, nine of the Indians 11 hits came with two outs, including all seven hits in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Chasers got a run back in the top of the sixth. After first baseman Ryan McBroom reached on an error and centerfielder Kyle Isbel beat out a bunt single, third baseman Travis Jones walked to load the bases. Following a pitching change, right-fielder Anderson Miller walked to force in a run, but right-hander Tanner Anderson retired the next two batters he faced to strand the bases loaded.
Gavin retired all seven batters he faced to lower his ERA to 2.93 in 40.0 innings while Zuber tossed a scoreless eighth inning to extend his scoreless streak to 6.1 innings.
Right-hander Nick Mears (Save, 1) pitched around a one-out walk to close the game for Indianapolis.
The Storm Chasers continue a six-game series at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Ind. on Tuesday, when right-hander Brandon Barker (0-0, 54.00) faces Indianapolis right-hander Luis Oviedo (MLB rehab). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT and coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.
