RailRiders Take Opener at Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. - A dominant pitching performance and timely hitting led the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to a 5-2 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Tuesday night at Polar Park.

Worcester took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run double from Josh Ockimey against Brody Koerner. The right-hander was stellar other than that blip, allowing only two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings, walking one and striking out four. Koerner retired the final nine batters he faced after Ockimey's double.

The RailRiders got on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally against WooSox reliever Brandon Brennan. Armando Alvarez drove in Greg Allen with a base hit, and Brandon Wagner brought in Rob Brantly with an RBI infield single to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the seventh Red Sox lefty Matt Hall walked the bases loaded, and Brantly came through with a two-run single to give SWB a 4-2 lead.

Trevor Lane struck out all three batters he faced out of the bullpen, and Greg Weissert logged 2.1 scoreless stanzas after him. Koerner, Lane and Weissert at one point combined to retire 17 consecutive batters.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against former RailRider Kaleb Ort. Trey Amburgey doubled and scored on an Allen infield single to expand the lead to 5-2.

Stephen Ridings set the Red Sox down 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his first career Triple-A save. RailRiders pitching retired 22 of the final 23 WooSox batters, with only one runner reaching base after the second inning.

The RailRiders continue their series with the Red Sox with a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Polar Park. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. The opener features RHP Deivi Garcia (1-3, 7.45) on the mound for the RailRiders opposed by LHP Kyle Hart (4-4, 4.58) for the Red Sox. Game two pits the SWB bullpen against Worcester righty Daniel Gossett (6-3, 4.72).
