Oil Kings Win Streak Halted with Setback in Lethbridge

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Lethbridge, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (15-4-2-1) dropped a tight-checking 3-2 result to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (8-10-1-0) on Friday night at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes got off to a strong start hemming the Oil Kings in their own zone for the first three minutes of the game and would finally open the scoring at the 7:46 mark. Edmonton product Justin Hall had a puck find his stick in the slot and he made no mistake elevating a shot under the bar to make it 1-0 for the home side.

The Hurricanes added to their lead late in the period as Alex Thacker re-directed home a Nolan Bentham point shot to make it 2-0 Hurricanes advantage with 1:38 left on the clock.

The Oil Kings would not head to the intermission down two though, as a late penalty by the Hurricanes put the red-hot Oil Kings power play to work and with just four seconds left on the clock, Dylan Guenther hammered home his team leading 12th of the year on a setup by Jakub Demek after the Hurricanes left the Coyotes first-rounder unaccounted for in front of their net.

The Hurricanes looked to snatch back the momentum early in the second period as they sent Thacker in on a clear-cut breakaway in the opening two minutes, but he would be robbed by the glove hand of Kolby Hay to keep Edmonton within one for the time being.

At the 7:27 mark of the middle stanza, the Hurricanes would extend their lead as Hall collected his second on the night after being setup for a wide-open backdoor tap in just as an Oil Kings penalty had expired.

The Oil Kings only mustered six shots on goal in the penalty filled period that saw them shorthanded on three separate occasions and left with a 3-1 deficit at the second intermission.

In the third period, the Oil Kings were able to draw back to within a goal after Josh Williams finished a beautiful give-and-go with Demek into the Lethbridge zone by elevating a backhand over the left arm of Bryan Thomson.

The Oil Kings would fire 15 shots the way of Thomson in the third period but could only muster the one goal as they dropped the 3-2 decision to end their win streak at six games.

Hay finished the night making 24 saves for the Oil Kings, while Thomson kicked out 36 for the 'Canes. Edmonton went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Lethbridge was 0-for-5.

Next up, the Oil Kings return to home ice for another Family Fun Sunday when they welcome the Saskatoon Blades to Rogers Place at 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 28.
