Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Winterhawks carried a 3-1 lead into the third period against the Canadian Hockey League's third-ranked team, but the Blazers roared back with three goals in quick succession to take a 4-3 win in Portland on Friday.
Kamloops, the league leader in road wins with 11, got on the board first when Matthew Seminoff hammered home a one-timer for an early lead midway through the first period, but Portland came up with three unanswered goals in the next 25 minutes to take control of the game.
Tyson Kozak knotted the game up at a goal apiece before the end of the frame following a beautiful individual effort by Jaydon Dureau to create the chance, then Marcus Nguyen and Kyle Chyzowski made it 3-1 Portland with second-period tallies. Nguyen chipped home an Aidan Litke feed at 4:20, while Chyzowski rippled the twine at 13:03 after a seam pass from Jonah Bevington found his tape.
The third period belonged to Kamloops, however, as Caedan Bankier, Daylan Kuefler and Marko Stacha each scored in the first 7:20 of the final frame to erase the Hawks' lead and put the Blazers up by one. Bankier found twine just 32 seconds after the second intermission, opening the floodgates for Kuefler to rifle one from the right circle five minutes later and Stacha to bat one home in the crease for the game-winner.
Portland's Dante Giannuzzi finished with 30 saves on 34 shots, including a number of key stops to keep Kamloops at bay early in the contest. Dylan Ernst was solid in the Blazers' cage as well, turning aside 43 of 46 Portland shots to backstop his team's 16th win of the season.
The Winterhawks continue their lengthy homestand with a matchup against Prince George on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at the VMC.
