Oil Kings Offence Goes Bust in Swift Current

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
EDMONTON, ALTA. - A few too many defensive break downs and not enough offensive push led the Oil Kings to a 4-2 loss Tuesday night in Swift Current.
The Oil Kings (3-4-1-0) struggled to generate offence against the Broncos despite outshooting the home side 32-24 as the Broncos (4-3-1-0) kept Edmonton outside of the danger zone for much of the game.
"We need to be a team that thrives on second and third efforts in all areas of the game, and we fell short of that here tonight," said Oil Kings head coach Steve Hamilton.
The Broncos converted on a pair of power play goals on seven chances, while the Oil Kings went 0-6 with the man advantage.
"I was disappointed with our lack of discipline. Taking those penalties absolutely kills any positive momentum that we build," Hamilton said.
Jon Martin opened the scoring for the Broncos 6:26 into the game as he sprung for a breakaway. Patrick Dea made the first save in the Edmonton net, but couldn't get the second chance as Martin buried his own rebound.
Edmonton evened it up before the end of the period as Garan Magnes banged away at a rebound in front, sliding it past Swift Current netminder Landon Bow for his first of the year.
Max Lajoie gave the Broncos the lead for good late in the second period as his point shot on the power play made it through a screen and off the far post and in. Swift Current struck again early in the third as Kade Jensen scored his first of the year, and Jake DeBrusk made it 4-1 with a deflection on a power play at 10:16 of the third period.
Brett Pollock scored late to cut the lead to 4-2 with 90 seconds to play, but the Oil Kings could come no closer.
Jordan Dawson picked up his first career WHL point with an assist on Pollock's goal. Dea finished with 40 saves for the Oil Kings.
Martin had a three-point game for the Broncos while Lajoie and DeBrusk each had two points. Bow finished with 30 saves to get the win.
The Oil Kings wrap up their four-game road trip with a 2-2-0-0 record. They'll be back at home Friday to face the Regina Pats. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at Rexall Place.
