Game Story
The Pats got off to a solid start in their Canalta Centre debut led by Daniel Wapple who turned aside 12 Tigers shots in the opening period. Nick Schneider was just as good at the other end, robbing Aaron Macklin on a two-on-one chance and making 16 saves in the frame. Two shots got behind Schneider in the opening twenty. Lane Zablocki batted a shot out of mid-air, but forward Matt Bradley snagged the puck before it could cross the line. The other was a long wrister by Sergey Zborovskiy that found its way to the back of the net through traffic in front. The powerplay goal gave Regina a 1-0 lead through the opening period.
The Tigers took their game up a notch in the early stages of the second period, holding the Pats in their own end for the opening three minutes. The Blue and White nearly took the wind out of the Tabbies' sails when Macklin got in alone, but was foiled by Schneider again. Medicine Hat thought they tied the game, but Cole Sanford was called for goaltender interference and sent to the box. The Pats took advantage with Connor Hobbs cashing in on the powerplay, using multiple Tigers and Macklin as a screen. The Tigers got it back a couple minutes later when Steven Owre slid the puck cross-crease to Mark Rassell who tapped it past Wapple. Both teams had chances to add to their totals, but Matt Bradley hit the post for the Tigers and Sam Steel couldn't convert on a breakaway as the score remained a 2-1 Regina advantage.
The third period saw the teams trade goals early. Austin Wagner started it off speeding by a Tigers defender and cutting across the net before scoring a shorthanded marker. Medicine Hat got it right back as Chad Butcher banked the puck in off Max Gerlach for the powerplay goal. The Pats regained the two goal edge when Sam Steel carried the puck to the bottom of the circle before snapping it just under the bar. With the powerplay back on the ice, the Pats put the game to rest when Steel froze everyone on the ice with a brilliant cross-ice pass to Adam Brooks who buried Regina's third powerplay goal. Brady Pouteau added the first of his WHL career into an empty net for the 6-2 victory.
