Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings and Swift Current Broncos combined for 12 goals on Friday night at Rogers Place with the visitors prevailing by an 8-4 margin.

The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board as just 39 seconds into the game, Josh Filmon staked his team to the lead after he cleaned up a rebound off an odd-man rush chance at the Edmonton net.

Filmon collected his second of the night less than four minutes later after lasering a shot top-shelf from the right-circle of the Edmonton zone on a Swift Current power play.

Before the period was halfway done, the Broncos collected another goal to increase their lead to three as on another power play, Connor Hvidston redirected in a Matthew Ward point-shot.

The Oil Kings were able to snag some momentum late in the frame after Rilen Kovacevic got them on the board in the final minute after he stepped over the Swift Current blueline and rocketed a toe-dragged wrist shot over the right shoulder of Swift Current netminder Joey Rocha and off the cross-bar and in to decrease the deficit to two at the first intermission.

In the second period, the Broncos added four more goals to take a 7-1 lead into the second intermission and all four of their goals were scored by Filmon, giving him a double hat-trick after two periods of play.

His first of the period, and third of the game, came just over four minutes in as he was able convert an Edmonton turnover in front of their net into a shorthanded goal.

At the 8:02 mark, he banged home a rebound after Kolby Hay had stopped Raphael Pelletier on a partial break.

With 7:19 left in the middle stanza, Filmon stepped out of the penalty box, got fed a perfect stretch pass from Adam McNutt in the neutral zone, and elevated a shot top-shelf on the breakaway.

With just under four minutes left before the intermission, Hvidston found an open Filmon in the slot and he one-timed the puck home for the first six-goal game in the WHL since Tyler Ennis of the Medicine Hat Tigers had one back on February 27, 2009.

In the third, the Oil Kings wouldn't go quietly as they scored twice in a span of 2:31 in the opening five minutes of the period.

First, John Szabo notched his first of the year on a hot-shot from the slot on a setup from Mason Finley. Then, Reid Larson broke into the Swift Current zone and from the right-circle, picked the far corner over the right shoulder of Rocha for his first career WHL goal.

With just over six minutes left in the game, the Broncos got a third power play goal as Adam McNutt blasted a shot in on a 5-on-3 man-advantage.

The Oil Kings closed the scoring on the night after Mason Finley deposited his sixth of the season with just a dozen ticks left on the clock.

Hay and Ronin Geraghty combined for 34 saves on the night for the Oil Kings, while Rocha turned in 18 saves in the Broncos crease. The Oil Kings went 0-for-7 on the power play, the Broncos were 3-for-8.

Next up, the Oil Kings hit the road to take on the Calgary Hitmen this Sunday at 2:00 P.M.
