Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (46-13-2-1) fell flat on Sunday afternoon as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (27-29-3-1) at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings wasted no time brining a near capacity crowd to its feet as just 16 seconds into the game, Jalen Luypen went coast-to-coast and snapped shot over the glove of Bryan Thomson to give Edmonton the quick 1-0 advantage.
The Oil Kings would get three power plays throughout the period but could not further their lead as Thomson kicked aside 11 straight shots to keep the Hurricanes within one after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Hurricanes took full control of the game as they would score five times in the frame to take a 5-1 lead into the second intermission.
Just 97 seconds into the second period, Brayden Edwards scored his third goal of the weekend after he was setup on the doorstep of the Edmonton net by Alex Thacker.
Thacker then found the back of the net himself just under three minutes later as he took advantage of a turnover inside the Oil Kings zone and ripped a shot just under the crossbar.
With just over nine minutes left in the period, Logan Wormald gave Lethbridge a 3-1 lead as he stuffed home a loose puck in front of the Oil Kings net.
The Hurricanes kept it coming at the 14:28 mark when Yegor Klavdiev weaved his way into the Edmonton zone and zipped a shot top-shelf from the slot.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would fire 15 more pucks the way of Thomson, but the Hurricane netminder stood tall to guide his team to the 5-1 victory.
Sebastian Cossa and Kolby Hay combined for 13 saves in the losing, while Thomson made 38 saves in the win. The Oil Kings were 0-for-5 on the power play, the Hurricanes were 1-for-4.
Chase Pauls rounded out the scoring for the Hurricanes with a power play marker with 32 seconds left in the middle stanza as he jammed home a rebound at the side of the Edmonton net.
Next up, the Oil Kings take on the Red Deer Rebels in a weekend home-and-home series starting Saturday, April 2 in Red Deer at 7:00 PM.
Edmonton Oil Kings Season Seats, Flex-Packs, Weekend Passes and Single-Game tickets, for as low as $20 per game, are currently on sale at oilkings.ca.
The Oil Kings next home game is Sunday, April 3 at 4:00 PM when they welcome the Red Deer Rebels to Rogers Place for a Family Fun Sunday.
