March 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Winnipeg, Man. - The Prince Albert Raiders (24-32-4-1) ended their weekend trip to Manitoba with a 5-2 loss to the Winnipeg ICE (47-9-3-2) on Sunday evening at Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.
Carson Latimer and Vladislav Shilo scored the Raider goals in the loss.
With the loss, the Raiders are four points back of the eighth-place Swift Current Broncos with three games at hand in the chase for the WHL Playoffs.
Winnipeg opened the scoring at the 6:32 mark of the first period. Jack Finley attempted a wraparound that was stopped by Tikhon Chaika, but the rebound hit a Raider in front. Connor McClennon was there to bang in the rebound.
With 3:56 remaining in the first, the ICE extended their lead. Chase Wheatcroft forced a turnover that Skyler Bruce carried into the zone. Bruce dropped it for Wheatcroft who wired a shot past Chaika to make it 2-0.
Winnipeg made it a 3-0 game with 26 seconds left in the first. Mikey Milne split the defence and fired a shot over Chaika's glove for the goal in the dying seconds.
Matthew Savoie added another goal for Winnipeg 1:06 into the second period. Conor Geekie dropped a pass for Savoie and he beat Chaika from the left faceoff circle to make it 4-0.
Latimer broke the shutout bid with 4:04 to play in the middle frame. He found Keaton Sorensen cutting to the net, getting around his man. Sorensen tried to slip a backhander through Daniel Hauser's five-hole but the Winnipeg netminder got a piece of it. The puck stayed in the crease and Latimer banged in the loose puck for his 14th of the season to cut it down to a 4-1 game heading into the second intermission.
Winnipeg responded early in the third period to restore its four-goal lead. Geekie's shot from the right faceoff circle went off a Raider stick when it was released and beat Chaika to give the ICE a 5-1 lead.
Shilo kept up his scoring touch with a goal late in the third period. Cale Sanders banked a pass off the boards to spring the Belarusian import into a one-on-three rush. Shilo's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle beat Hauser over his blocker to give him his eighth goal of the season to make it 5-2. The goal extended Shilo's point streak to a career-best five games.
The three-goal deficit was as close as the Raiders came for the rest of the game as it finished 5-2. Chaika stopped 20 shots in a losing effort for the Raiders. Hauser made 13 saves for Winnipeg.
The Raiders are back at home on Wednesday night to open a three-game homestand when the Brandon Wheat Kings visit the Art Hauser Centre on "This Girl Can" Night Presented by Prince Albert Memorial Gardens and River Park Funeral Home. Game time is 7 p.m. CST. Tickets are available at SaskTix.ca and at the Raiders Office.
