Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen hosted their Every Child Matters game Sunday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome. This was the second annual Every Child Matters game presented by the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club and Siksika Health Services, this year in partnership with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, Okaki Health Intelligence, and the Blackfoot Confederacy.
It was an important game between the two teams with both clubs pushing for a final playoff spot. Swift Current opened up the scoring with a goal by Cole Nagy to give them the lead heading into the first. A second period breakaway tally came from Carter Stebbings to give Swift Current the two goal lead heading into the third. Karson King extended Swift Current's lead to three at 4:25 into the third. Despite multiple power play opportunities for Calgary and out shooting Swift Current, Calgary was unable to put one past netminder Isaac Poulter, giving the visiting team the 3-0 victory.
Today's game was steeped in Blackfoot culture, including traditional dance performances, drumming, the teaching of Blackfoot culture by partners around the concourse, as well as the serving of traditional Blackfoot cuisine. Together, the partners are working to address stereotypes and racism by advancing inclusion in our communities through the promotion of Indigenous culture, language and history, and promote healthy lifestyles for all youth by highlighting the benefits of participation in sport and physical literacy. The Every Child Matters game was an opportunity for those who attended to acquire greater exposure, education, and understanding of the impact residential schools and form a path towards truth and reconciliation.
The Hitmen are back on 'Dome ice Wednesday, March 30 to host the Medicine Hat Tigers. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Calgary will then face the Broncos in a home-and-home set making the trip to Swift Current on Friday, April 1 before the return match at Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday, April 3 at 2:00 p.m.
