March 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince George Cougars News Release
VICTORIA, BC- The Prince George Cougars' (21-35-2-1) earned a weekend split with their 3-0 win over the Victoria Royals (22-35-5-1) Saturday night at Save on Foods Memorial Centre.
The win snapped the Cougars' three-game losing streak and moves them into sole possession of 8th place in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the Spokane Chiefs.
"That was a big win for us in a game we had to win. Getting the first goal and killing off a bunch of penalties early gave us momentum. Really happy for [Tyler] Brennan to get that shutout," said Cougars' Associate Coach Josh Dixon.
Tyler Brennan earned his fourth shutout of the season, as he stopped all 24 shots fired his way. He was also named the game's second star. Saturday was Brennan's second shutout this season against Victoria.
Special teams played a key role in the win for Prince George, as their power play and penalty kill manufactured their first two goals. In the first period, Craig Armstrong scored shorthanded, and Riley Heidt scored with the man advantage. The penalty kill was sharp on Saturday, as the Cougars killed-off all five Royals' power play opportunities.
The Cougars led 2-0 after 20 minutes and 3-0 through two periods. Prince George didn't give up much, as they held the Royals to six shots in the opening frame and five in the third period.
Armstrong and Heidt put Prince George up a pair of goals after the first period. Armstrong opened the scoring at 9:59, as he slipped his shot through the goalie's pads at the tail end of a Royals' power play. Armstrong's goal was the team's third shorthanded marker this season. On the Cougars' first power play of the game, Heidt shoveled in a rebound across the goal line at 15:32 to make it 2-0.
It was a quick start for the Cougars in the middle frame, as Blake Eastman scored just 37 seconds in to make it 3-0. Armstrong forced a turnover in front of the Royals' net. He took the puck around the goal before finding Eastman out front who buried into an open net.
Unfortunately, Eastman did not finish the game, as he suffered a leg injury late in the third period. Tarun Fizer was given a five-minute kneeing major a game misconduct.
GAME NOTES
Armstrong now has six points (2G-4A) in his last five games against the Royals. Riley Heidt has three goals in his last two games. Saturday was the Cougars' ninth in 13 games against Victoria, as they are now 9-4-0-0 against the Royals this season.
