Tips Top Hawks Behind MacInnes' 37-Save Relief Effort
March 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Winterhawks held an early lead, but goaltender Koen MacInnes put in a 37-save shutout in relief and Jackson Berezowski struck twice as the Silvertips roared back for a 7-3 win in Everett on Saturday.
The game kicked off with both teams throwing haymakers, trading goal after goal in an opening stanza that wound up 3-3 in the first intermission. Niko Huuhtanen got the scoring started early with a goal 67 seconds in, but Gabe Klassen and Clay Hanus each tallied for the second straight game to put Portland ahead within five minutes of Huuhtanen's strike. And after Berezowski netted his first of the night at 11:16, Tyson Kozak got credit for the Hawks' second go-ahead marker just 50 seconds later on a faceoff which somehow bounced into the Everett net.
But Portland's good fortune ended there - Michal Gut knotted the score at three apiece before the end of the frame to kick off a run of five unanswered goals for the Silvertips. Berezowski potted his second midway through the second period, followed soon after by Jacob Wright's 20th of the season to make it 5-3. Alex Swetlikoff and Austin Roest piled on in the final frame to seal up the 7-3 win for the hosts.
Taylor Gauthier finished with 30 saves on 37 shots for the Winterhawks.
The two clubs will face off again at Angel of the Winds Arena on Friday, April 1.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"it was a really good experience for us. We are going to the playoffs and we still did some really great stuff tonight, but we need to look at next week and kind of show the good stuff and the bad stuff we need to get better at, otherwise it was kind of like a playoff game."
