Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings wrapped up their weekend with a loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place.
The Hurricanes blitzed the Edmonton net right off the hop scoring three goals in the opening 4:35 of the contest to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Anton Astashevich opened the scoring with a net-front tip, followed by Hayden Smith muscling a low shot home from the left-circle and capped by a Jett Jones breakaway tally.
In the second frame, the Hurricanes would use another early period offensive burst to double their lead after getting goals from Tyson Zimmer, Miguel Marques and Cole Shepard in the opening 7:11.
Before the second period was out, the Hurricanes power play connected with Smith firing in his second of the afternoon to make it a 7-0 lead for the visitors through 40.
In the third period, Smith would complete his first career WHL hat-trick shorty after Zimmer snagged his second goal of the contest and just before Nolan Bentham hit the scoresheet with a power play marker to make it a 10-0 Lethbridge lead.
The Oil Kings would get the final two goals of the game after Mason Finley lasered a shot past the outstretched glove hand of Harrison Meneghin with just over seven minutes left in the game.
Noah Boyko finished the scoring with 3:28 to play with a crafty bank-shot goal from below the goal line.
Logan Cunningham and Kolby Hay combined for 41 saves in the game for Edmonton, while Meneghin made 22 saves for Lethbridge. The Oil Kings went 0-for-3 on the power play, the Hurricanes were 4-for-8.
