Louisville Bats News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Louisville Bats (11-16) defeated the Toledo Mud Hens (9-16) by a 4-3 score Wednesday at Fifth Third Field, taking two of three games in the series. With the victory, the Bats have now won three consecutive series on the road.
Louisville scored the ballgame's first run in the second inning, when catcher Stuart Turner's first RBI of the season scored Brian O'Grady off Toledo starting pitcher, right-hander Spenser Watkins (1-0, 7.71). Both starting pitchers received a no-decision, with Louisville right-hander Lucas Sims (1-0, 5.33) striking out seven Mud Hens in 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, with three walks on 97 pitches, 57 strikes.
The Bats extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, with Christian Colon bringing home Nick Senzel on an RBI double, and O'Grady scoring Colon with a line drive single. Toledo answered in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs, and tied it up 3-3 against Louisville reliever Jackson Stephens in the fifth in his lone inning of work.
The Mud Hens came within feet of taking a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, when a ball off the bat of Mikie Mahtook barely missed a home run and was ruled a ground-rule double. Louisville right-hander Sal Romano, who earned his first win of the season, did a masterful job working around the loaded bases with one out, keeping the game tied heading into the eighth inning.
O'Grady finished off his impressive performance with an eventual game-winning home run in the top of the eighth, a solo homer that made it a 4-3 Bats lead. The Bats first baseman finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, now batting .367 on the season with a 1.152 OPS.
Right-hander Jimmy Herget tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and Anthony Bass shut the door in the ninth, earning his fifth save for Louisville this season.
The Bats head to Indianapolis to face the Indians for a four-game series at Victory Field starting on Thursday. Louisville took two of three games from the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates at "The Vic" from April 19-21, and will try to win their fourth consecutive series away from Louisville. Right-hander Keury Mella (1-1, 4.78) will start the opener for Louisville, with righty Mitch Keller (2-0, 3.60) slated to start for Indianapolis.
