Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls pitching staff gave up 16 hits and five runs, falling 5-1 to the Norfolk Tides. Josh Rogers (2-1) tossed seven innings of one-run baseball to earn the win for Norfolk, while Bulls starter Ryan Merritt (1-2) suffered the loss.

Norfolk's offense got on Bulls pitching early and often, registering a total of 11 hits off Merritt. The Tides got the scoring started on a Mason Williams solo home run and added another run on a Ryan Mountcastle RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulls countered with a Jake Smolinski triple and a Mike Brosseau RBI-groundout to cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning.

The Bulls bats fell silent after the fourth inning, with Tides pitching allowing just one hit on a Kean Wong bunt single. Meanwhile, Chance Sisco added to the lead with a two-run home run for his second of the year and series to make it 4-1. Mountcastle put away the Bulls in the ninth, with an RBI single off Oliver Drake, ending his scoreless streak at 11.2 innings and giving the Tides a 5-1 lead.

Bulls pitching got a boost from reliever Andrew Kittredge, who kept the team in the game thanks to 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Kittredge notched five strikeouts, while allowing just three hits and no walks.

The Bulls had won three previous series before dropping two of three to the Tides. Durham will now begin a five-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers on May 2nd.
