Offense Wakes up Late to Stun Sea Dogs

The Harrisburg Senators came back to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 8-7 in ten innings Wednesday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The Senators rallied to win after trailing by three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth.

The Senators offense broke their 29.2 inning scoreless streak with a run in the third to open the scoring. Osvaldo Abreu started the rally when he hit a groundball to the shortstop, Deiner Lopez, whose throw to first went out of play which allowed Abreu to reach second base. The next batter, Daniel Johnson, lined an RBI singled to center as the Senators took a 1-0 lead.

Portland came right back with a run in the bottom of the frame when Janzten Witte singled home Danny Mars to tie the game at 1-1.

Michael Chavis broke the tie in the fifth with a two-run home run to put Portland ahead 3-1.

Senators starting pitcher Sterliing Sharp allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter through five and a third innings.

Portland starter Teddy Stankiewicz held the Senators to just the one run on five hits over seven frames.

The 'Dogs added a run in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Witte.

Down 4-1 in the top of the ninth, the Senators came back to tie the game. Austin Davidson walked and Alec Keller doubled to open the frame against Sea Dogs reliever Jordan Weems, putting runners at second and third. With two outs, Daniel Johnson hit a double into center field which scored a pair and cut the deficit to one. The next batter, Carter Kieboom, ripped a double down the left field line to plate Johnson and tie the game at 4-4.

After Roman Mendez retired the side in the bottom of the ninth, the game went into extras and the Senators took the lead with four runs in the top of the 10th. With the free-runner, Dan Gamache, at second to start the inning, the first three batters, Taylor Gushue, Jake Noll, and Davidson hit an RBI double, single and double respectively to plate three runs. Later in the frame, with two outs and Davidson at third, Abreu reached on a throwing error by the shortstop Jeremy Rivera which allowed Davidson to score.

With the Senators leading 8-4 in the bottom of the tenth, and the free runner, Witte, at second to start the frame, Luke Tendler and Jordan Betts hit back-to-back home runs to bring Portland within a run. Later in the frame, with runners at first and second and one out, Ronald Pena induced a game-ending 3-6-3 double play by Rivera to seal the 8-7 win and earn his third save.

Mendez (5-3) picked up the win while Weems (2-3) took the loss after surrendering all seven of the Senators runs, five of which were earned, over the final two innings.

The first seven Senators batters finished with at least one hit, while five had multiple knocks, led by Alec Keller who went 3-for-5 to notch his fourth three-hit game over the past six contest. Johnson paced the Senators with three RBI. The win is the Senators' third when trailing after eight innings this season.

The Senators next scheduled games on Thursday and Friday at FNB Field have been postponed due to forecasted flooding on City Island.
