Vancouver Canadians News Release

(PK Park - Eugene, OR) - A cloud of dust parted to reveal Eugene's SS Jace Peterson had beaten a tag from Canadians C Chris Schaeffer giving the Emeralds a 2-1 victory over Vancouver on Saturday night out at PK Park on Saturday night.

The Canadians came into Saturday's game tied for top spot in the Northwest League's West Division alongside Eugene with just three games to play.

Pitching took center stage with Eugene's RHP John Barbato striking out 10 over his five innings of work before turning the game over to his bullpen. Vancouver's RHP Zach Breault was also impressive over his five innings allowing a long run in the top of the 5th inning when CF Kyle Gaedele led off with a single, advanced out to second base on a walk to C Matt Colontonio and scored on a single from 3B Jorge Minyety.

With the Canadians trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the 6th, LF Matt Newman led off the inning with a double to center field and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from CF Jon Jones to even the score at 1-1.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 8th inning before the deadlock was broken with Eugene taking their second lead of the game. With one out, SS Jace Peterson hit a ground ball out to Canadians 3B Balbino Fuenmayor who's throw across the diamond to 1B Randy Schwartz was high allowing the speedy shortstop on-base. From there, Peterson would steal second base and come around to score on a single from 1B Zach Komentani that had Vancouver CF Jon Jones coming up throwing with Peterson's hand just working around the tag for the run.

Eugene closer RHP Kevin Quackenbush sealed the victory limiting the Canadians to a lone walk as the Emeralds regained top spot in the Northwest League's West Division with a hard fought 2-1 win.
