Everett AquaSox News Release

EVERETT, Wash. -- The Everett AquaSox (13-22) lost their fifth straight game and fourth home series of the 2011 season by falling 5-3 to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (15-20) for the seventh time in eleven games between the two teams.

Salem-Keizer starter Lorenzo Mendoza (3-2, 5.66 ERA) became the 14th right-handed starter out the last 17 that the AquaSox have faced in the month of July to hold Everett to less than three earned runs during their start. The Sox have not scored more than four runs in the last four games against the Volcanoes, and are 3-18 on the season when they score four or less runs in a game.

The Volcanoes got to Sox starter Bennett Whitmore (2-3, 4.95 ERA) early by scoring in a four-hit first inning, with the run coming on an RBI single by designated hitter Mike Murray for his team-leading 27th on the season. Salem-Keizer only managed the one run through four innings even with their eight hits off Whitmore during that span.

The Volcanoes added two more runs in the fifth when left-fielder Kaohi Downing stole home on a double steal, followed in the next at-bat by an RBI single by right-fielder Brett Krill. The Sox responded in the bottom of the inning when second baseman Jorge Agudelo plated home third baseman Ramon Morla who had tripled in the previous at-bat.

The two teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including Volcanoes catcher Joseph Staley and Agudelo each hitting a solo home run, but the AquaSox did not get closer than two runs after the fifth. The loss drops the Frogs to 1-6 in two-run games on the season, and 2-13 when trailing after the fifth inning.

Everett will look to salvage the last game of the series when they send out right-hander Stephen Landazuri (3-2, 5.35 ERA) against Salem-Keizer right-hander Cameron Lamb (2-3, 3.93 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Fox Sports 1380 KRKO.
