Indians Tied For First Place After 4-2 Loss To Dust Devils
July 23, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA-For at least one night, Spokane couldn't capture the magic that had sent the team to the top of the Northwest League Eastern Division. The Indians loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to cash in as Spokane lost to Tri-City 4-2 in front of 4,875 fans at Avista Stadium for B-I-N-G-O Night presented by Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort and 101.1 FM Rock âN' Roll's Greatest Hits.
Trailing 4-2 after eight and half innings, the Indians filled the bases with runners after a single, a hit batter, and a walk. As Brett Nicholas came to the plate, it seemed like the cardiac kids were headed for another fantastic finish. Instead, Dust Devils reliever Craig Bennigson induced an inning ending double play, and forced a logjam at the top of the NWL East. Spokane starter Nicholas McBride (0-1) was sharp through four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing four hits and three runs as Tri-City took the lead for good. Indians relievers Juan Grullon and Jose Monegro combined to hold the Dust Devils off the board for the last 4.1 innings, but Spokane's offense couldn't capitalize.
Third baseman Drew Robinson hit his second home run of the season in the loss.
Spokane and Tri-City are now tied for the lead in the NWL East with three games remaining in the first half.
Tomorrow is the finale of a three game series against Tri-City and is Fireworks Night presented by the Spokesman-Review.
